Jets Nation Recap: Jets Get Snowed In By The Avalanche

It is one thing to dominate possession but one must take advantage of said possession in order to be successful. The Winnipeg Jets failed to capitalize despite controlling the puck and fell 4-1 to the Colorado Avalanche.
Cue the sad highlights.
The Jets did open the scoring when Toby Enstrom’s seeing-eye point shot went off an Avalanche defender and found the back of the net at the 13:40 mark of the first period. It was Enstrom’s first goal of the season.
The Jets dominated play in the second but couldn’t find a way to beat Avs goalie Semeyon Varlamov. When Dustin Byfuglien took a cross-checking penalty late in the second period, the Jets penalty killing woes continued as Carl Soderberg banked one past Michael Hutchinson to even the score going to intermission.
When the Jets killed off an Enstrom double minor for high-sticking early in the third, it looked like the Jets would regain the momentum. That was nullified a short time later when former Jet Zach Redmond’s shot deflected off Cody McLeod’s skate past Hutchinson, giving the Avs the lead for good.
Matt Duchene, who is the subject of trade rumours, burned past the Jets D and slid one past Hutch for the insurance marker. Blake Comeau finished the scoring with an empty netter.

Three Keys:

Domination But No Reward: The Jets were clearly the superior team in the first two periods, but they either misfired on their opportunities, or refused to shoot the puck. Coaches keep saying put pucks towards the net. The Jets should heed that call.
Not-So Special Teams: Once again, the Jets special teams let them down. The home team were 0/2 on the power play while giving up another goal on the penalty kill. Head coach Paul Maurice needs to address the special team issues before it’s too late.
Big Save Not There: It may not be fair to blame Michael Hutchinson for this loss, but when a big save was required, Varlamov came through for Colorado while the third Colorado goal is one Hutch may want back. Harsh? Yes but them’s the breaks sometimes.
