Jets Nation Recap: A Snowy Night Ends In Disappointment

On a night when the Manitoba capital received its first true taste of winter, the Winnipeg Jets experienced the cold taste of defeat. Despite a strong first period in which the Jets took a 3-1 lead, they let it slip away as the Detroit Red Wings came back and edged the Jets 4-3 in a shootout. The loss snapped the Jets two-game win streak.

Game Notes:

  • Let’s start with this. Drew Stafford is not a top six forward. Yet, Paul Maurice continues to roll him out there with the high-end skill players in hopes that gets Stafford going. Instead, the likes of Blake Wheeler and Mathieu Perreault are hemmed into their own zone because Stafford either makes a lazy pass, or is out of position in defensive zone coverage. I don’t know what Maurice sees in him.
  • Like we mentioned off the top, the Jets got off to a strong start. Goals by Andrew Copp, Dustin Byfuglien and some kid named Patrik Laine, perhaps you’ve heard of him, gave the Jets the early lead. Laine’s goal now ties him with Sidney Crosby (I hear he’s pretty good at hockey as well) atop of the Rocket Richard award race with 17 apiece. Laine’s fun. We like fun here.
  • The second period was once again a cold, torturous prison of ice for the Jets. Two goals by the Wings evened the score as Detroit slowly started to take over the possession stats as well. The Jets also failed to score on two power play opportunities which tipped the scales of momentum to the Wings favour.
  • The third period was a near disaster for the Jets. The Wings outshot the Jets 10-3 in the final frame as the visitors had complete control. In fact, the Jets did not record a shot until the 13 minute mark. Not good.
  • Nikolaj Ehlers is on a bad luck streak. The Dashing Dane once again had numerous scoring chances but failed to convert. His goalless streak is now at 14 games and one wonders if he’s over-thinking when he’s in scoring range.
