The Winnipeg Jets will play their home opener on a Friday night, October 16th, against the Calgary Flames, the club announced on Wednesday.
By the time the Jets finally open up at the MTS centre, the season will be in full swing. Based on some of the other opening day announcements on Wednesday, it looks like the season will start on October 7, so the Jets will probably start with at least a couple (and as many as four) games on the road before playing in front of the home fans at the MTS Centre.
During the 2014-15 campaign, their first playoff campaign since relocating to Winnipeg, the Jets managed an impressive 23-13-5 record in front of the always boisterous (and occasionally controversial) MTS Centre crowd. They also outscored their opponents by 25 goals in 41 games at home, while they were outscored by six in 41 road games.
Home-ice advantage matters it would seem, especially when your home crowd is as raucous as Winnipeg’s is typically.
