Only one day after he signed an ATO with the Manitoba Moose, the Jets have locked up former Prince George Cougar Jansen Harkins to a 3-year ELC.
The 19-year old centre was a 2015 second round pick by the Jets.
Harkins just came off a season with the Prince George Cougars of the WHL that saw him put up 72 points in 64 games. His Cougars just got eliminated in the first round of the WHL playoffs, but he totalled seven points in six games.
His father, Todd, played 48 NHL games with the Calgary Flames and Hartford Whalers before a stint in the IHL and five years in the DEL. His Uncle, Brett Harkins, played 78 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Columbus Blue Jackets.
Standing at 6’2, 194 lbs, Harkins has good size and has drawn comparisons to David Krejci in the past.
A two-way centre, his has been respected for his defensive game and playmaking abilities. Harkins’ true weakness’ show in his skating and efficiency which can certainly be worked on moving forward.
He has shown he can score at the WHL level, putting up 242 points in 275 games including two 72+ point seasons.
