Future Plans: Nov. 24, 2014

No matter how good or poor a
team is playing, fans always seem to be concerned about a team’s prospect list and
who will be the next player to make a difference on the team. The Jets’
faithful are no different
In the past two weeks since our
last Future Plans, Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate the St. John’s IceCaps had a strong
surge winning five of six games and losing one in extra-time.
Below is a list of Winnipeg’s
top 10 prospects over the past two weeks, and reasons that they are positioned
where they are on the list.
NOTE: I consider a Jets
prospect to be any player whose rights are owned by the Jets and have not yet
played 50 games in the NHL.
Without further adieu, lets get
started.
#10: Chase De Leo – C, Portland
Winterhawks (WHL) [Last Ranking: Unranked]
New to the list, Chase De Leo had a strong two weeks for the Portland
Winterhawks. The 19-year-old centre had four goals and two assists in six games
played. He is also on a two-game point streak.
#9: Jimmy Lodge – C, Mississauga
Steelheads (OHL) [Last Ranking: 9th]
Despite being dealt by the Saginaw Spirit a week ago, Lodge is having himself
quite the year in the OHL. Jimmy had played in just four games over the past
two weeks, but has added two goals and three assists to his season totals. He’s
on an eight-game point streak and leads his new team in points with 21.
#8: J.C. Lipon – C, St. John’s
IceCaps (AHL) [Last Ranking: 5th]
Lipon had a rough two weeks leading into this ranking, adding just two assists
in six games played with the IceCaps. He was a +2 in that time and added 13
penalty minutes to his season total. His 40 PIMS this season leads all IceCaps
skaters, the next closest is Carl Klingberg with 27.
#7: Connor Hellebuyck – G, St.
John’s IceCaps (AHL) [Last Ranking: 10th]
Hellebuyck had a great two weeks since our last ranking, playing every game
between the pipes for St. John’s and winning five of six. Along with two
shutouts, Hellebuyck had a 1.15 GAA and a 0.963 SV% over the past two weeks.
#6: Carl Klingberg – LW, St.
John’s IceCaps (AHL) [Last Ranking: 4th]
Klingberg continues to drop on our list for the third straight time, not
because his play has been notably bad, but because other players are playing pretty
good as of late. The big Swede added a pair of goals and assists in six games and
is currently riding a three-game point streak with the IceCaps.
#5: Andrew Copp – C, U. of
Michigan Wolverines (NCAA) [Last Ranking: 7th]
It appears Copp has found his scoring touch with Michigan over the past two
weeks. The Wolverines’ captain netted a trio of goals and added four helpers in
four games, and is now on a five-game point streak. Copp is currently tied for
third on the team with 10 points in 11 games.
#4: Eric O’Dell – C, St. John’s
IceCaps (AHL) [Last Ranking: 6th]
O’Dell continues to climb through the ranks after yet another strong two weeks
with St. John’s in the AHL. The Ottawa-native scored three goals and assisted
on a pair of goals in six games. I can’t wait till O’Dell gets his call up with
the Jets, he’s just what Winnipeg needs in the bottom six.
#3: Josh Morrissey – D, Prince
Albert Raiders (WHL) [Last Ranking: 2nd]
Morrissey drops on spot on our list after the combination of a tough week by
him and a somewhat strong week by our number two player. In five games with the
Raiders, Morrissey was a -5 and added a goal and three assists in that time.
Sure his numbers are down, but he’s a d-man that we all know will be playing
for Canada this December in the World Junior Championships.
#2: Nicolas Petan – C, Portland
Winterhawks (WHL)  [Last Ranking: 3rd]
The Portland Winterhawks’ centre had a relatively strong two weeks, moving him
up one spot on our list. His two goals and three assists in five games gives me
reason to believe that he is starting to find his offence that was missing at
the start of the season.
#1: Nikolaj Ehlers – LW,
Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) [Last Ranking: 1st]
Surprise, surprise… Ehlers is still at the top of our list, but why shouldn’t
he be? In the past two weeks, the Czech forward had five goals and eight
assists in just five games with the Mooseheads. He is currently riding a
10-game point streak and sits second on the team in scoring with 30 points in
18 games. He’s two points back of the team leader despite playing eight less
games.

SUMMARY

Now don’t forget, this is just
my opinion, and I would like to know yours. Who do you think is Winnipeg’s top
prospect? Is there a player not on a list you think should be? Who would you
replace them with from this list? Be sure to leave your thoughts and opinions
in the comments section bellow.
Until next time,
