Counting on Connor Hellebuyck to find his Vezina Trophy-winning form while getting more help from his supporting cast seems like the Winnipeg Jets’ most direct path to extending their decent trend as a home underdog.
The Jets are +105 home underdogs and the Calgary Flames are -125 away favorites with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Winnipeg is 5-3 in its last eight games as a home underdog, while the Flames are 10-7 in their last 17 matchups as a favorite on the road since the start of the 2019-20 season.

The last five regular-season matchups between the teams have all been decided by one goal, including Calgary’s 4-3 overtime win on Monday and Winnipeg’s 3-2 win on Tuesday. Eleven of the last 16 Calgary-Winnipeg regular-season matchups have finished UNDER at betting sites.
The Flames are 4-4-1 and are tied for fourth place in the North Division on a points-percentage basis. Left wing Johnny Gaudreau, who is on a nine-game point streak, has helped Calgary amass 59.8 percent of the scoring chances in the first two matchups this week against the Jets, according to Natural Stat Trick.
Calgary, with its cadre of two-way forwards such as center Sean Monahan and left wing Matt Tkachuk, excels at making opponents work to earn their offensive-zone time. In the five-on-five phase, the Flames are eighth in the 31-team NHL in their share of shot attempts (52.9 percent), 20th in shots-for (49.6), and 15th (50.7) in high-danger chances. Calgary is 19th in goal scoring (2.78) and ninth in goals against (2.56), while they have the 11th-ranked power play (25.0 percent) and 20th-ranked penalty killing unit (78.1).
Jacob Markstrom has been sharp so far this season with a 4-2-1 record, 2.27 goals-against average and .924 save percentage. However, in 14 career games against Winnipeg, Markstrom is 3-9-2 with a 3.38 GAA and .892 save percentage.
The Jets are 6-3-1, and showed improvement in the five-on-five phase of the game on Tuesday, which was their second outing with a rejigged top six comprised of a Mark Scheifele-Andrew Copp-Nikolaj Ehlers first line, with captain Blake Wheeler flanking Paul Stastny on the second unit. That increased familiarity can only be a boon to Winnipeg, which is 16th in the league in their share of five-on-five shot attempts (50.4), 14th in shots-for (50.6), and 27th (43.8) in high-danger chances. The Jets are fifth in goal scoring (3.50 per game) and 19th in goals against (3.00), while they have the 14th-ranked power play (21.6 percent) and 18th-ranked penalty killing unit (78.6).
Connor Hellebuyck should get the goaltending start after Laurent Brossoit saved 29-of-31 shots on Tuesday. Hellebuyck has a 4-2-1 record with a 2.69 GAA and .907 save percentage. Hellebuyck allowed a fluke goal on a bouncing shot from about 115 feet away in Monday’s 4-3 overtime defeat, but he helped the Jets earn a regulation tie despite a season-worst 17-4 deficit in high-danger chances. In 11 career games against Calgary, Hellebuyck is 6-2-1 with a 2.16 GAA and .924 save percentage.
The Jets are off until their road game against the Flames on Tuesday. They also host the Ottawa Senators for a two-game series next week on Feb. 11 and 13.
