Having star goalie Connor Hellebuyck well-rested gives the Winnipeg Jets an outside possibility of being a value play in the rematch of a home-and-home series. The Jets are a +125 home underdog while the Washington Capitals are a -145 away favorite with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Jets are 1-6 in their last seven games as a home underdog with the total finishing OVER five times at betting sites; interestingly enough, they have allowed only two goals in each of the three most recent games in that sample. They are also 4-11 in their 15 home games against Eastern Conference teams with the total finishing OVER nine times. The Capitals, who earned a 4-3 shootout win against the Jets on Tuesday, are 9-2 in their last 11 interconference away games.

Capitals at Jets | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Capitals are 39-18-6 and are trying to be more consistent on the road where they are 4-4 in their last eight games as an away favorite. After squandering a three-goal lead against Winnipeg on Tuesday, the Alex Ovechkin-led Capitals, who are eighth in the NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (51.6 percent), have reason to try for a statement win. But they have scored just three goals in their last two outings as a road favorite.
On the year, the Capitals are third in goals scored (3.46) and 16th in goals against (3.03). On special teams, Washington’s power play is ranked 15th (20.3 percent) and the penalty killing unit ranks fourth (83.7).
Washington used Braden Holtby in the first leg of the home-and-home. Understudy Ilya Samsonov has a 16-5-1 record with a 2.41 goals-against average and .916 save percentage but has struggled this month with a 4.55 GAA and .855 save percentage in his last four games.
The Jets are 32-27-6 as they try to stay in the Western Conference wild-card race. Winnipeg’s main lineup question involves the status of first-pairing defenseman Josh Morrissey (upper body injury), who has missed their last two games. Offensively, top-line center Mark Scheifele has nine points (4G-5A) during his five-game point streak and left wing Nikolaj Ehlers has 14 points in as many games, so the Jets’ top-end attackers are managing to produce even though Winnipeg is 21st in the 31-team NHL in in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (48.5 percent).
The Jets are 18th in goals scored (2.97) and 12th in goals against (2.97). On special teams, Winnipeg’s power play is ranked 16th (20.2 percent) and the penalty killing unit ranks 25th (77.3).
Hellebuyck, who has a 26-20-5 record with a 2.72 goals-against average and .918 save percentage, has not played since Sunday. He has a 1.98 GAA and .940 save percentage in his 10 games this season when he’s had at least three days between starts.
The Jets visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday before starting a three-game homestand.
