JNGD.S8.G6 Flight Plan: Oilers Come Through The Pipeline

The six game homestand continues as the Jets welcome the Oilers to town on Tuesday night. Being a part of the NHL Global Series has given the Oilers a tough start to the season as they find themselves with the least amount of games played in the NHL. The Oilers are looking to slowly catch everyone else as they have only played three games so far. With only one win in those games, it’s going to be a desperate team that rolls into Bell MTS Place.

Jets Notebook

  • The Jets are coming off a win against the Hurricanes where Brossoit stole the show. He had 42 saves and only allowed one goal despite getting peppered with shots from high danger areas all game.
  • There are a few different ways to look at the Jets season in the early going. They have split every game so far, not winning or losing more than one game in a row. However, the Jets are still undefeated at home. Which streak will break against the Oilers?
  • Goals have been hard to come by for the Jets so far. They have only six goals in their last four games after scoring five in their first game of the year. Through five games, only two Jets have multiple goals (Connor, Laine) While only 7 players total have scored this season.
  • Maybe the recipe for scoring is playing the Oilers. Last season the Jets scored 4.67 goals per game against the Oilers while only allowing 1.67 against.
  • If we are talking about recipe’s for success, this might be Ehlers chance to finally break out of his slump. Ehlers recorded a hat-trick in the first game against Edmonton last season on October 9.
  • Byfuglien sat out the game against the Hurricanes with an upper body injury. Kulikov was the replacement as he saw his first action of the season. It’s yet to be determined if big Buff will be back against Edmonton. If not, look for Chiarot playing with Kulikov on the second pairing.

Oilers Notebook

  • The Edmonton Oilers have scored five goals so far this season. It’s no coincidence that Connor McDavid has five points this year as well. In case you haven’t figured it out, it means that McDavid has either scored or assisted every single Oilers goal this season.

  • Perhaps the biggest weapon the Oilers have had in the past is no longer with the team. Mark Letestu was a well known Jet killer during his time in Edmonton. In fact, over his career, he recorded more goals against Winnipeg than any other team in the league. If there is any time Oilers fans might still want Letestu, it’s tonight in Winnipeg.
  • As mentioned above, the Oilers have only played three games so far this season. It’s a tough schedule quirk as they are near the bottom of the league standings almost entirely because of the schedule. Granted, if the Oilers had won three straight, nobody would be using this as an excuse…
  • Obviously McDavid is the player to watch tonight. In eight career games against the Jets he has zero goals and eight assists. This goose-egg leaves Winnipeg as one of the only two teams who McDavid hasn’t scored on in his young career (New Jersey is the other).
  • The Oilers have struggled with depth to start the year as only six players have recorded a point through three games. The rest of the team needs to pick it up if the Oilers have a shot at making the playoffs this season.
