In case you missed it, we have started talking about hockey cards and collectibles here at JetsNation. The first post was about some of my own favourite cards and I asked everyone to show us their favourite pieces from their own collection. It’s always a blast to see what everyone collects because every person is looking for something different. Some people love cards, others prefer signed memorabilia, while some enjoy other collectibles such as bobbleheads or coins/pins etc.
The beautiful thing about collecting is that you are able to do it how you want, when you want, and on the budget you want. It’s entirely customizable to perfectly suit your own needs. In the previous post, I showed some of my favourite cards. These included two newly signed cards by the recently inducted Jets Hall of Fame members Randy Carlyle and Thomas Steen. My other favourite is a Joe Sakic patch card numbered out of 75.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when asking others to show off their items, but the responses were fantastic. There was some great items shown and we will take a look at a few of them in this post.
Also, if you haven’t sent us a pic of your favourites, you still can. Depending on how many responses we get, there might be a round two of showing off collectibles.
We are kickin’ it old school with the first item. Here’s two tickets to the last Jets 1.0 game. It was the 1996 playoffs where the Jets fell to the Detroit Redwings 4-1. This is a very cool item to keep and plenty of people likely never kept these tickets. Being able to get a copy is definitely unique and a very cool item to have.
Next up we have likely the largest collection of Essensa autographed cards on the planet. Notice how this collection is just 25% of the total collection. The user must literally be the blocker of Essensa to be able to get so many cards signed. Scratch that, I’m actually convinced this is Bob Essensa himself and he’s just trolling us on twitter.
This is some extremely dedicated work and a really impressive collection to have. Later in the thread it’s mentioned that the blue inked cards were signed in person. To be able to get so many signed in person takes dedication and a lot of effort. This is one of my favourite responses to our post.
If you thought the 90’s were old-school, check out this item from 1974. It’s an official certificate indicating a subscribing member from over 40 years ago!
Here’s another really cool and really old item. It’s a 1983 coin with the Jets logo on one side and Hawerchuk’s face on the other. It was tough to find any data on this item, but it appears to be from a promotion back in 1983. There was originally supposed to be 7 different players but the promotion didn’t really get attention and only three were issued as coins; Brian Hayward, Tim Watters, and Dale Hawerchuk. This rare and storied past makes for a really interesting item.
This one isn’t entirely Jets, but the rarity of it makes it worth posting. It does include former Jet Bobby Hull in a collection of eight great players. It includes small pieces of jerseys from eight of the greatest players ever including Howe, Gretzky, Harvey, Sawchuk, Dryden, Richard, Hull, and Orr. This truly is a 1/1 piece and it’s an absolutely beautiful card.
The last item of the day is a nice warm-up puck used earlier this season on hockey fights cancer night. I’ve always thought that a used item was really neat. Receiving an item that was used by the players gives a different feeling than some other objects like cards or bobbleheads. Having a puck that was actually shot by the likes of Laine or Scheifele and stopped by the pads of Hellebuyck gives a really great collectible.
