WTWF: Jets take on Flyers in first half of back to back

After downing the Senators on Thursday evening, the Jets are looking to continue their success on the road as they head into Philadelphia for a noon matinee. It’s a tough schedule for the Jets as they only had a day and a half off since playing the Senators. To make matters worse, their game tomorrow is another matinee so they won’t even have 24 between today’s and tomorrow’s games. Because that wasn’t bad enough, the Jets also had to travel for each one of the games. It’s definitely not an easy task, but Winnipeg needs to keep banking the points to remain in a wildcard spot.
Here’s what to watch for during today’s game.
1) Going Streaking
With the victory against Ottawa, the Jets have now won three straight games. This is the fifth time this season that they have won three games in a row, but the first four times Winnipeg lost the fourth game. The Jets haven’t had a four game winning streak this season and you have to go back to March 2019 as the last time Winnipeg has won four in a row. The Jets definitely have a chance to get their fourth victory in a row and they will need to string together a number of wins if they want to keep their wildcard spot.
2) Top Six Outburst
While it was the third line who did most of the scoring a few games ago, the top six has found their mojo with the new line combinations. Scheifele had four points against the Senators while Laine and Connor chipped in two points each. Wheeler, Copp, and Ehlers all had one point as the entire top six managed to find the scoresheet. Scheifele’s hat-trick came at just the right time after he hadn’t been able to find the back of the net in the last month. Hopefully those woes are behind him as the Jets will need him to be at his best down the stretch.
3) Demelo’s second game
It was a relatively quiet debut from Dylan Demelo as he logged 18:36 of icetime and didn’t register any points on the scoresheet. Despite the lack of points, Maurice gave a very candid interview about his play after the game.
#NHLJets HC Paul Maurice on the debut of D Dylan DeMelo, dropping a coach's porn reference...stay for the complete explanation.
It appears the Pomo is fully on board with Demelo and hopefully he can continue to be a steady presence on the blueline. The Jets don’t need him to be flashy, they just need a solid defensemen who can make the correct reads and the easy plays.
Watch for Demelo in this game as he starts to get acquainted with Winnipeg’s systems. He will be up to speed in no time and it will definitely be something to watch as he starts to get more comfortable.
4) Hellebuyck back in the crease
Laurent Brossoit played an excellent game against the Senators and was able to give Hellebuyck a little more rest. With such a heavy workload this season, every extra day helps to keep Hellebuyck fresh. It will be interesting to see how Maurice handles the second half of the back to back tomorrow. Will he go back to Brossoit for the second out of three games? Or will he ride Hellebuyck on the back to back to try and pick up both wins?
Maurice said Hellebuyck starts against the Flyers.
The Jets need Hellebuyck to be at his best down the stretch as we march closer to the playoffs. Hellebuyck’s been really solid lately with a strong performance against the Kings and Blackhawks to pickup two straight victories. The goaltending is always a factor and it will definitely be something to watch for during this weekend of back to back action.
Bold Prediction
The Jets will keep their winning streak going as the top six is on a roll. Look for the top six to nab at least three or four goals in a high scoring affair. The Flyers will keep it close, but the Jets will win 6-4.
