The Winnipeg Jets started their Development Camp with a bang, signing Patrik Laine to a three-year Entry Level Contract with a AAV of 3.575. The Finnish winger was the second overall selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Elite talent cures a lot of ailments for an organization, and the Jets were pretty lucky add a second overall talent to a team that really was not as bad as their record, and then won the draft lottery on top of that.
Laine had an exceptional year.
He put up 17 goals and 16 assists as a 17-year-old in the Finnish SM-Liiga regular season, and then put up 10 goals and 5 assists in 18 games in the playoffs, while winning the championships and being awarded both the Rookie of the Year and Playoff MVP award.
He also put up 7 goals and 6 assists in the World Juniors and 7 goals and 5 assists in the World Championships.
Patrik Laine is projected to have an impact season, not unlike Jets’ phenomenal rookie, Nikolaj Ehlers, last season.
