The Winnipeg Jets added a proven veteran presence to their lineup today, signing forward Gustav Nyquist to a one-year contract worth $3.25 million.
Nyquist, 35, brings a wealth of experience to Winnipeg, having played over 800 NHL games across stints with the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and most recently, the Minnesota Wild. The Swedish winger is known for his high hockey IQ, slick puckhandling, and reliable two-way play — qualities that could make him a key piece in the Jets’ middle six.
In 2024–25, Nyquist tallied 21 points (9 goals, 12 assists) in 57 games split between the Wild and Predators. Though it was a step back from his career-high 75-point campaign the year before, his veteran presence and ability to contribute in all situations still hold significant value — especially for a Jets team aiming to remain competitive in the Central Division.
This signing comes as part of Winnipeg’s effort to bolster its forward depth with experienced, versatile players. Nyquist can slot in on either wing, contribute to the power play, and log responsible minutes on the penalty kill. He also provides leadership to a relatively young group of wingers that includes Cole Perfetti, Nikita Chibrikov, and Brad Lambert, as Chibrikov and Lambert are expected to have more of an NHL role next season.
From a cap standpoint, the $3.25 million AAV is a modest investment for a player of Nyquist’s pedigree. It’s a low-risk, potentially high-reward move that gives head coach Scott Arniel more flexibility with his lines heading into the 2025–26 season.
While Nyquist’s arrival may not represent the high-profile acquisition some fans had hoped for — particularly with uncertainty surrounding Nikolaj Ehlers’ future — it remains a solid addition by the Jets. If Nyquist can stay healthy and recapture his previous form, he has the potential to serve as a valuable contributor during a playoff run, all while preserving the organization’s long-term salary cap flexibility.
