A trade involving the Winnipeg Jets? Well, yes, but it’s one of their prospects in the OHL. Kevin He, the now former captain of the Niagara IceDogs, has been traded to the Flint Firebirds alongside defenceman Darcy Dewachter, a 2026 fourth-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick in exchange for forward Chase Hull and a hefty package of seven draft picks.

Full trade details:

Firebirds receive:

  • Kevin He (F)
  • Darcy Dewachter (D)
  • 2029 2nd-round pick
  • 2026 4th-round pick

IceDogs receive:

  • Chase Hull (F)
  • Two 2026 2nd-round picks
  • 2027 3rd-round pick
  • 2028 3rd-round pick
  • 2029 3rd-round pick
  • 2028 4th-round pick
  • 2027 6th-round pick
He, 19, is in his fourth and final OHL season and had spent his entire junior career with Niagara prior to the deal. Through 28 games this season with the IceDogs, the former captain recorded 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points. In total, He has put up 102 goals and 193 points across 220 regular season OHL games.
We also saw He get some NHL preseason action this year with the Jets, where he looked quick and promising, an encouraging sign for his future within the Jets organization.
“An elite motor, that’s the source of He’s success. It powers every part of his game, including his non-stop forechecking presence, knack for stealing the puck at the blue line, and explosive open-ice hits. It’s also how He generates offence. He burns past defenders with powerful strides to get to the net, dropping the shoulder if necessary,” said the Elite Prospects 2024 NHL Draft Guide.
That assessment feels spot on. He’s fast, and that speed makes him dangerous, especially on the forecheck. While he’s not a massive presence at just six feet tall, he isn’t shy about throwing the body, which only adds another layer to the youngsters game.
It’s clear Flint is going all-in this season. Acquiring a player in his final OHL year, and paying this kind of price to do it, signals a push for a deep playoff run. This is very much an “all-in” move, and one that should make the Firebirds a tougher team to face.
