Winnipeg Jets Development Camp: Looking at the invites

By Garret Hohl

The Winnipeg Jets released their Development Camp roster, which includes some non-Jet prospects. These free agents are excellent to invite, as it allows the Jets to further scout talent and build relationships, all while filling out the roster to have a more efficient camp.
For the most part invites tend to be a bit of fodder, as it is rare for these players to move beyond ECHL or European pro-level players at the peaks of their career.
But, there can sometimes be talent found.
Goalies
Eric Brassard
Brassard is a graduate of the QMJHL, playing four seasons for four different teams. The 6’1 netminder actually was a teammate of Nikolaj Ehlers in 2014-15. Brassard was always given some respect as a potential prospect, but was never drafted. In his first draft eligible year he was ranked 23rd for North American netminders at one point by Central Scouting.
Brett Magnus
Magnus was a freshman starter in the NCAA. He is an intriguing invite and we talked about him and Nick Kossof previously here. At 6’3 Magnus definitely has size and his 0.912 is not too shabby either.
Nick Kossoff
Kossoff was also discussed previously here on Jets Nation. Kossoff is another NCAA freshmen who has size (6’3) and a decent save percentage (0.918). Unlike Magnus, though, Kossof was the back up for his team, but there is still some promise.
Austin Lotz
Lotz is a local boy, from St. Adolphe, Manitoba. At 6 feet tall, Lotz is a tad undersized for goaltenders, and his numbers are quite weak even before adjusting for the WHL being a higher save percentage league than the QMJHL or the OHL. At 21-years-old, the Manitoban will be looking for a pro-level job this fall.
Olivier Mantha
Mantha stands at 6’1 and just finished his sophomore season for the University of Alaska-Anchorage. At 23-years-old, Mantha is one of the older players. He has an okay save percentage for the NCAA, but nothing special. He was nominated for the WCHA All-Academic Team, however, so there is some intelligence and/or hard working characteristics for Mantha.
Defenders
Alec McCrea
McCrae is a 6’3, right-handed shooting defender in the NCAA. The 21-year-old put up 0.44 point per game pace in his freshman year, which is 44th for undrafted defenders and 8th for freshman undrafted defenders. While his scoring is not dominating like, there is an interesting combination of both size and scoring.
Corey Schueneman
Schueneman is a 6’0, left-handed shooting defender in the NCAA. The 20-year-old freshman put up 0.37 poitns per game, which is tied for 79th for undrafted defenders and 15th for undrafted freshman defenders.
Justin Woods
Woods stands at 6’2 feet and shoots left. With a 0.22 point per game pace, the 22-year-old is the lowest scoring invite defender. However, Woods missed the 2014-15 season after being diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Just being able to play one year later is an accomplishment in itself.
Forwards
Scott Davidson
Davidson is a 6’1 tall winger. The 21-year-old played for Quinnipiac University where he put up 15 points in 42 games. Davidson 0.36 point per game pace is 47th for undrafted freshman forwards.
Jiri Fronk
Fronk in many ways is thought of as a prospect for the Jets. The 6’2 winger from the Czech Republic was a member of the Jets’ Young Stars squad in Penticton, and earned himself an AHL contract with the Manitoba Moose. There he dressed for 33 games and showed some offensive flair.
Tom Marchin
Marachin may be the cream of the crop of invites. The winger has size at 6’3 and he put up the second highest point per game pace of undrafted freshman forwards. Marachin put up a 0.87 point per game pace for Brown University, a higher point per game pace than many drafted players such as Alex Tuch of the Minesota Wild.
Jacob Pritchard
Pritchard is a 21-year-old left winger with some flair for offence. He was a noted prospect for the 2014 draft class, but ultimately went undrafted. He stands at 6 feet tall now and just put up 21 points in 34 games as a freshman, which places him 36th for undrafted freshman forwards.
Louie Rowe
Rowe is the Jets token tall-guy invite, with being 6’6. The winger does have some offensive skills, as seen by putting up 39 points in 60 games; however, this was as an USHL overager. Rowe will be attending university next year and a freshman for Arizona State’s second year in the NCAA.
