The Winnipeg Jets have announced their nominee for this year’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
Today, the Winnipeg Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) unanimously named Jonathan Toews as its nominee for the Masterton Trophy.
The trophy is awarded annually by the (PHWA) to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.
“I’m honoured by the recognition,” Toews said about his nomination. “If I stop to look back at what the last four or five years have been like, it’s definitely been super unpredictable. Something that I never thought I would have to go through in my life, but at the same time I am thankful for all the struggles because honestly, it’s cliché, but it’s where I’ve learned the most about myself, about hockey, about life, so I’m thankful… This season, it’s been a struggle. Every day I’m digging deep and trying to find the energy and find a way to contribute.”
Toews stepped away from hockey at the end of the 2022-23 season after dealing with health issues, including Long COVID and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
The three-time Stanley Cup champion began his NHL comeback on July 1, 2025, when he signed a one-year deal with his hometown team.
Toews, 37, hasn’t missed a single game this season, playing in all 77 while recording 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points with five games to go.
Toews has already won several NHL awards: the 2010 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, the 2012-13 Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward, and the 2014-15 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.
Despite a rocky season for Winnipeg, Toews has been an excellent leader on and off the ice, as he always has been, and will look to continue helping his hometown team push for the final playoff spot on Thursday in St. Louis.
