Today, July 8th, marks one week since the NHL free agency began. The Jets lost a few players and added a handful of new additions to their roster last week, but they still have around $20 million in cap space. There’s of course no rush to spend that cap space, and maybe the plan is to keep some space for this year’s trade deadline. Either way, it’s a good time now to stop and see who else is out there in free agency.
This year’s free agency class was rather “weak” compared to previous seasons. With almost all of the top players already signing new contracts, it’s time for teams to look a little deeper to find potential players that could make an impact in the 2025-26 season. Using Matt Larkin of the Daily Faceoff’s free agent rankings, here are three players that the Jets front office should take a look at in the upcoming weeks as potential “adds” for their current roster.
9 – Jack Roslovic (RW)
The ranking of “9” is simply what Roslovic was ranked out of all available free agents on July 1st, but today, July 8th, he might be one of the best remaining forwards. The 28-year old had a $2.8 million cap hit last season, and in 81 games last year with the Carolina Hurricanes he tied his career high in goals with 22 and added 17 assists for 39 points. You may remember Roslovic from his three seasons with the Jets, as he was drafted 25th overall by Winnipeg in the 2015 NHL draft. Roslovic was moved alongside Patrik Laine in the “blockbuster” trade that landed the Jets Pierre-Luc Dubois. Roslovic won’t be able to replace Nikolaj Ehlers’ scoring abillity, but a reunion with the middle six forward could be a good fit for the Jets. AFP Analytics projects Roslovic’s next contract to be around 3 years at $4.1 million a year.
15 – Matt Grzelcyk (LD)
There aren’t many quality defencemen left on the free agent market, but Matt Grzelcyk might be one of them. The 31-year old had a $2.8 million cap hit last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. On a struggling Penguins team, Grzelcyk quietly had himself a very successful season. In 82 games (his first season playing 80+ games), Grzelcyk scored once and added 39 assists (a career high) for a career high 40 points. Grzelcyk isn’t the type of “flashy” defenceman that you may be starting to see more of in today’s NHL, but he’s the kind of player that could round out the Jets left side. The price to sign Grzelcyk might be too much for a 2nd / bottom pairing defence, but a left side of Josh Morrissey, Dylan Samberg and Matt Grzelcyk could be quite efficient. AFP Analytics projects Grzelcyk’s next contract to be around 3 years at $3.8 million.
60 – Robby Fabbri (LW)
I went a bit lower on the board for this final remaining free agent, but I think Robby Fabbri could be a good fit in the Jets bottom 6 forwards group. The 29-year old had a $4 million cap hit last season with the Anaheim Ducks (his contract was signed with the Detroit Red Wings three years ago). After a career high 18 goals in 2023-24, Fabbri was traded to the Ducks to play out the final year of his contract. Fabbri missed some time due to injury in 2024-25, finishing the season with 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points in 44 games. Fabbri may not have been the best “fit” for the Ducks, and is now looking for a fresh start with his next contract. The Jets have a handful of players that could slot into their 4th line now, but I think Fabbri could be a player that would fit the Jets 2-1-2 zone defense system. Fabbri’s next contract will likely be a 1-year “prove it” deal, with a substantial pay cut expected, as AFP Analytics projects his deal to come in at around $1 million.
There’s plenty of other intriguing options still out there as week two of NHL free agency begins. Now is the time to see if teams like the Jets will make a move, or if they will explore other options via trade or wait until closer to the opening game of the 2025-26 season.
