The Winnipeg Jets dropped their third straight contest Wednesday night as they opened a five-game road trip in Washington, D.C. Gabriel Vilardi scored twice, Mark Scheifele netted his 12th, and Eric Comrie stopped 30 shots in a 4-3 loss to the Capitals.

First line provides the offence

Winnipeg has still been searching for offensive contributions throughout the lineup, but that wasn’t the case Wednesday night as the top line of Kyle Connor, Vilardi, and Scheifele combined for six points.
Vilardi got the Jets on the board late in the first, making it 2-1 Capitals. Early in the second, he redirected a Josh Morrissey shot on the power play past Charlie Lindgren to tie the game. Scheifele pulled the Jets within one with less than five minutes to go in the third, but once again, it wasn’t enough as Winnipeg fell 4-3.
You’d have to think that if the Jets were getting some secondary scoring from the bottom nine, there would’ve been several games this season where they could have at least salvaged a point. Winnipeg has now lost five games by a single goal in regulation.

Vilardi scores goal No. 100

Vilardi reached a pretty cool personal milestone in the U.S. capital. He scored goal No. 99 in the first period, so you’d imagine the milestone was on his mind during the intermission. Less than two minutes into the middle frame, he tied the game with the 100th goal of his NHL career.

Salomonsson makes NHL debut

We knew Neal Pionk would make the trip but weren’t certain if he would play, so Elias Salomonsson stepped in on the second pairing alongside Dylan Samberg, making his NHL debut. Salomonsson looked confident and poised on the blue line, making a few crisp passes. He also had some expected rookie moments, including a turnover that led to Connor McMichael giving Washington a 4-2 lead. That’s part of the learning process, and mistakes are bound to happen.
The six-foot-two Swedish defenceman logged 16:18 of ice time, finishing with one block and two hits.
“Yeah, there was a lot of nerves, of course,” said Salomonsson post-game. “But you settle in as the game went on there. It was a lot of fun.”
The road trip continues Friday when the Jets meet Nikolaj Ehlers and the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
