Wins keep on coming for the Winnipeg Jets, who defeated the New York Islanders 5-4 in regulation last night for their third straight victory, closing out their five-game homestand at Canada Life Centre.
There were plenty of goals on display, including seven combined in the second period. Kyle Connor (22), Josh Morrissey (8), Jonathan Toews (6), Dylan DeMelo (3), and Adam Lowry (4) scored for the Jets, while Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves as Winnipeg improved to 18-22-5.
Goals, goals, and more goals
I wasn’t exaggerating when I said there were “plenty of goals,” because there certainly were.
Connor opened the scoring early in the first period, lifting the stick of Matthew Barzal before putting the puck past Ilya Sorokin at 4:20. Winnipeg then added two goals in a 42-second span within the first seven minutes of the second period. Morrissey grabbed a loose puck in front and fired a shot through traffic at 5:41, before Toews added his third goal in as many games on the power play at 6:23.
The Islanders responded with a scoring spree of their own.
New York found the back of the net three times in 2:41, with goals from Anthony Duclair (8, 7:40), Emil Heineman (14, penalty shot at 8:58), and Kyle MacLean (2, 10:21).
Winnipeg answered back to regain the lead when Mark Scheifele fed DeMelo at the point, and his shot found its way through traffic and past Sorokin.
Lowry capped off the seven-goal middle frame by redirecting a Neal Pionk point shot with just 20 seconds left in the period to make it 5-3, which stood as the eventual game-winner.

Toews continues to shine
Since returning from the Christmas break, Toews has seemingly found his groove.
The Winnipeg native has three goals in his last 10 games, all coming in his past three contests, while adding four assists for seven points. He also ranks second in the league in faceoff percentage at 63.1%, trailing only Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux (65%).

Scheifele records 500th assist
Scheifele recorded his 500th NHL assist on DeMelo’s second-period goal. With the milestone, he became just the second player in franchise history to reach the mark, joining former captain Blake Wheeler (550).
The Jets now hit the road for a one-off in St. Paul, Minnesota, as they conclude the season series with the Wild on Thursday. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
