The Winnipeg Jets’ struggles continued Friday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina, as they were pumped 5-1 by the Carolina Hurricanes. Mark Scheifele scored his 13th of the season, the Jets’ lone goal, while Thomas Milic made 30 stops in his NHL debut.
Milic makes NHL debut
After spending three-plus seasons with the Manitoba Moose and some time with the Norfolk Admirals, Thomas Milic finally got his opportunity to play in his first NHL game. It was also the second straight game in which a Jets prospect made his debut, with Elias Salomonsson making his on Wednesday in Washington and then playing his second career game Friday in Carolina.
Milic stood on his head for most of the afternoon. Carolina held a 6-0 shot advantage seven or eight minutes into the game, but the B.C. product kept it 1-1 until the 11:52 mark of the third period, which opened the door for three more Hurricanes goals in a four-goal final frame.
Bottom-nine remains invisible
The biggest issue with this team right now is the complete lack of offence outside the top line. Once again, the only scoring came from that group, Scheifele’s 13th, assisted by Gabriel Vilardi.
As of today, Nov. 29, it’s been 11 days since someone in the bottom-nine scored a goal, that being Adam Lowry’s opener in Columbus on Nov. 18. Where has the scoring gone? There’s absolutely no fire or drive in the Jets’ game right now. You can talk about Eric Comrie and now Milic all you want, but you’re not going to win many hockey games when you register just 13 shots on goal and rely entirely on your top line while leaving your goaltender out to dry.
Manitoba boys get it done for Carolina
Winnipegger Seth Jarvis opened the scoring at 16:06 of the first period, Brandon product Jordan Martinook restored the lead at 11:52 of the third, and Jarvis added two more to complete the hat trick, giving him 15 goals on the season.
The Jets will play the second half of their back-to-back today in Nashville against the Predators, hoping to get something going. Puck drop is at 6:00 p.m. CST on Sportsnet West.
