The Winnipeg Jets didn’t get the start they were hoping for in their first game of a four-game homestand, falling behind 3-0 to the Dallas Stars early in the second period. Mark Scheifele gave the Canada Life Centre crowd some life, scoring his 15th and 16th of the season in the back half of the middle frame to make it a 3-2 game heading into the second intermission. Jason Robertson restored Dallas’ two-goal lead with his 19th on the power play, and Logan Stanley answered shortly after to cut it to one again. But the comeback fell short, as Winnipeg dropped its fourth game in the last five, losing 4-3 in regulation.

Not starting on time

After Saturday’s tragic night in Edmonton, where the Jets gave up four goals in the first period, including two in the opening five minutes, you’d hope they’d come out ready to go. Instead, the same issues showed up again.
Esa Lindell opened the scoring just 44 seconds in, firing a shot through traffic that beat Eric Comrie cleanly for his fourth of the year.
Dallas carried a 1-0 lead into the second, and just 1:16 into the frame, Roope Hintz made it 2-0 on the power play. A little over a minute later, Alexander Petrovic put the Jets in an even deeper hole, giving the Stars a three-goal cushion as Winnipeg continued to struggle out of the gates.

Pushback

Despite the slow start, the Jets did show some pushback, getting within one goal two different times. Scheifele got Winnipeg on the board 11:04 into the second when Kyle Connor fed him for a one-timer from the left circle. Then, with 1:08 remaining in the period, he buried another one-timer from nearly the same spot to make it 3-2.
Dallas extended the lead early in the third, but Stanley’s goal at 14:06 brought the Jets back within one once again. That was as close as they’d get, though, as the Jets ran out of gas.

Special teams struggles

For the sixth straight game, the Jets allowed a power play goal, and they had four power plays of their own, including a crucial one with 2:30 left that could’ve tied it. Winnipeg has now gone seven straight games without scoring on the man advantage.
“That’s something they’re good at,” said Scheifele. “That’s an opportunity where we need to get one, or at least get some opportunities or get some chances. It sucked that we didn’t.”
The Jets continue their homestand on Thursday as the Boston Bruins make their lone visit to Manitoba’s capital. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
