Secondary scoring has been a major issue for the Winnipeg Jets this season, but that wasn’t the case Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres. Tanner Pearson and Cole Koepke both found the back of the net, Kyle Connor recorded his 15th to open the scoring, Gabriel Vilardi added an empty-netter for his 12th, and Eric Comrie was lights out for the second straight game, turning aside 34 shots in Winnipeg’s 4-1 win.

Much better first period than Monday

In Monday’s meeting against Buffalo, the opening 20 minutes were a complete disaster. The Sabres jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 3:01 mark, carried a 3-0 advantage after one, and went on to win 5-1. Friday night, Winnipeg made sure that didn’t happen again. Connor opened the scoring 4:24 into the first, jamming home his own rebound five-hole after Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped his initial attempt.

Depth scoring

The Jets’ top line has been rolling, but the rest of the forward group has struggled to contribute. Coming into Friday’s game, the last forward outside the top line to score was Nino Niederreiter in Nashville last Saturday. The fourth line finally ended that drought with two huge goals.
With the game tied 1-1, Cole Koepke stripped Owen Power at the Jets’ blue line and sent Tanner Pearson in alone. Pearson beat Luukkonen for his fourth of the season at 2:22 of the second.
Koepke added his first in a Jets uniform at 18:42, taking a pass from Morgan Barron and sliding the puck under Luukkonen to give Winnipeg its first two-goal lead of the game.

Comrie shines… again

Since being pulled in Buffalo on Monday after allowing three goals on 14 shots, and getting no help from the team in front of him, the 30-year-old goaltender has completely responded. Comrie has stopped 63 of the last 66 shots he’s faced, including 29 in Montreal on Wednesday and 34 more against Buffalo on Friday. Simply outstanding.
The Jets will face the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night in the second half of a back-to-back. Puck drop is at 9:00 p.m. CST on Sportsnet West.
