The Winnipeg Jets were hoping to close out their three-game homestand with at least two wins, but a late goal from Dylan Guenther sealed a 3-2 victory for the Utah Mammoth on Sunday night. Dylan DeMelo and Mark Scheifele scored for Winnipeg, while Josh Morrissey tallied two assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves in the loss.
Turnovers prove costly
With the game tied 2-2 late in the third period, the Mammoth found a way to steal two points. JJ Peterka forced a turnover in the Jets’ zone, and Logan Cooley fed Dylan Guenther in the slot, who beat Hellebuyck high glove side for the game-winner.
“I think it was kind of a back-and-forth game, pretty sloppy out there, but you’re in a 2-2 game late in the third and it’s just a weird series of events, a one-timer from a pretty dangerous guy in the slot,” said Josh Morrissey. “We really liked our first, didn’t love our second, and then the third was kind of there for the taking. They found a way to get that one, and that was it.”
DeMelo scores first goal since January 20
After a scoreless first period, Dylan DeMelo opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the middle frame, firing a shot off the post and in past Vitek Vanecek for his first goal since Jan. 20.
Morrissey hits 300 career assists
Despite playing their third game in four nights, the Jets’ top defenceman showed no signs of fatigue. Morrissey recorded the primary assist on both Winnipeg goals, reaching 300 career assists, becoming the first defenceman in franchise history to hit that milestone. He joins Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and Bryan Little as the only players in franchise history to reach the 300-assist mark.
Winnipeg now hits the road for one game as they head down south to St. Paul, Minnesota, for a Central Division clash with the Wild on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT on TSN3.
