The Jets continue to fly high, all while staying perfect on the season, improving to 6-0-0 tonight with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Tonight’s game marked the beginning of a mini 3 game road trip for the Jets. Tonight’s game was also 1 of the 16 games in action tonight for the NHL’s “frozen frenzy”, where all 32 teams played in a game throughout the night.
Entering the day as the only undefeated team, the Jets were determined to keep their perfect season alive. Rasmus Kupari re-entered the lineup, replacing David Gustafsson, after Kupari missed the Jets last game against the Penguins due to injury. Other than that substitution, the Jets kept their lineup the same, sticking with what has worked well so far this season. Connor Hellebuyck returned to the crease after Eric Comrie started his 1st game of the season on Sunday afternoon against the Penguins in a 6-3 Jets win. Here’s a recap of tonight’s action.
The game started off a little slow, with the shots on goal after 10 minutes of play just 3-3. The Blues would open the scoring in the 11th minute off a rebound in front following a point shot. Brandon Saad found the lose puck, and put it past Hellebuyck for his 500th career point. That goal gave the Blues some momentum for the rest of the 1st period, as shots on goal finished at 11-6 for the Blues. Josh Morrissey took the only penalty of the period, a hooking call in the final minute of the 1st.
The 2nd period was where the Jets excelled the most in this game. The 1st penalty kill of the game seemed to energize the team, and they began picking up the pace of the game. Ryan Suter got called for tripping against Nikolaj Ehlers almost 3 minutes into the 2nd, and that gave the Jets their 1st powerplay of the night. The Jets were unsuccessful on this one, but they got some good chance on Blues goalie Jordan Binnington.
Only 2 minutes after that penalty, the Jets went back on the powerplay following a holding call on Brayden Schenn. The Jets didn’t fail on this powerplay, tying the game up at 1. Cole Perfetti dished the puck back to Neal Pionk, who shot it on goal, and Nino Niederreiter tipped it home past Binnington to even the score.

The Jets took the lead just 5 minutes later after continuing the push the play, all while creating more scoring chances. Ehlers made a nice drop pass to Perfetti, who sent it back to the point for Colin Miller, who unleased a rocket of a shot past Binnington. The 94 mph blast gave the Jets the lead at 2-1.
A 3rd Jets goal was added by Kyle Connor, his 5th of the season, around 4 minutes later. Connor continued his trend of sniping goals past the netminder. A nice passing play by Perfetti set up Dylan Samberg, who would feed Connor on the left side in prime shooting position. That’s now 4, count that, 1,2,3,4 games in a row with a goal for Kyle Connor.

The shots on goal in the 2nd period were 14-9 for the Jets, and it really looked like they deserved the results they were getting by the end of the period. Going into the 3rd period, it didn’t look like the Blues were completely out of this one, but it was going to be difficult for them to gain some momentum following a great 2nd period by the Jets.
The Blues made a nice give and go play in the Jets zone 5 minutes into the 3rd. Jordan Kyrou shot it on goal, and Brandon Saad found the rebound for his 2nd goal of the night. Kyrou picked up his 5th assist of the season, while Robert Thomas also collected his 5th assist of the season with a secondary assist.
An unfortunate mistake by Dylan Samberg gave the Blues their 2nd and final powerplay of the night, from a “puck over glass” delay of game penalty. Hellebuyck stood tall in goal, and the Blues finished the night 0/2 on the powerplay. Both goalies made some key saves as the 3rd period went on, but it was Hellebuyck who stood out with an incredible toe save in the final minute of the game.
That great save was the last major chance the Blues would get this game, and the Jets held on for the 3-2 victory. The final shots on goal were 29-24 for the Blues, and both teams finished the game with just 4 penalty minutes each.
Tonight’s 1st star of the game had to be Cole Perfetti. Sure, Hellebuyck was great and Saad scored 2 goals for the Blues, but Perfetti led all skaters with a 3 assist performance. As I described in all 3 of the Jets goals, Perfetti was the guy who was responsible for creating space and setting up the scoring chances that led to each of the Jets 3 goals. A game like Perfetti had tonight will hopefully give him some confidence to continue to shine in his top 6 role for this team.
Next up on the road trip for the undefeated Jets is a showdown with the Seattle Kraken. The Jets will look to improve to 7-0-0 on the season, and you can catch this game at 9 pm CT on Thursday night.
