To the surprise of nobody, the Jets fell to the Flames last night by a score of 2-0. It was a rough outing as the Jets iced a predominantly Moose-bound team while the Flames were using it as a tuneup for their NHL squad.
It’s tough to evaluate things during a game like that, but there’s always something to learn when watching preseason hockey. Here are the takeaways from last night’s game.

1) The Jets were badly out-played.

As mentioned above, nobody is surprised by this given the large disparity between the two lineups. The Jets buckled down defensively, but everyone could tell that Calgary was eventually going to break through and score some goals. Overall, the Jets were out-played, but they did manage to play fairly strong defense in their own zone. Defense wasn’t the problem however, as the Jets didn’t really generate any scoring chances, even with the man-advantage.

2) Both goalies were really good.

Eric Comrie got the start in this one and he made some excellent saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes. He gave up a powerplay goal in the second period, but made plenty of saves in this game. He looked comfortable in the crease and was moving really well, especially on the penalty kill.
In the third period, Mikhail Berdin made his NHL debut and it was exactly as advertised. He showcased his puck playing abilities while still being solid in the crease. Perhaps the highlight of the game was his nice little toe drag to get around a forechecker in the corner. Overall, it was great to see Berdin in the lineup and get some action.

3) Gustafsson had some great moments.

It’s never a good thing to take lots of penalties, but the Jets were able to get a long look at some new penalty killers. Gustafsson specifically got some time on the PK as the Jets killed off a double minor in the first period. The impressive part of Gustafsson’s shifts was how disruptive he was in the neutral zone. He was able to slow down the puck and draw Calgary off-side with a smart stick-check. Moments later he helped force a turnover as Calgary broke over the line and Winnipeg cleared the puck. It’s the little things that Gustafsson does that will help him crack the pro roster sooner rather than later.

Tidbits

  • Morrissey had a great defensive play on a two on one midway through the game. Gaudreau had the puck on his stick and Morrissey closed off the play to negate any possible scoring chance.
  • The second Flames goal had some help with the dreadful defense of Nogier. He allowed Bennett to get the inside lane as they skated towards the net. Had Nogier forced his way to the goal-side of Bennett, the goal likely wouldn’t have happened.
  • Vesalainen was still largely unnoticeable in this game. He did have some good shifts as he looked more interested last night compared to other games. It’s still been an overall tough preseason for him, but we have to keep in mind that preseason games aren’t worth all that much.
