Mark Scheifele found the back of the net twice and Connor Hellebuyck made 15 saves to earn his first road win of the season as the Winnipeg Jets soared past the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Thursday night.
Winnipeg got things rolling 5:45 into the first period when Vladislav Namestnikov buried his first of the year. Gustav Nyquist fed a pass down low to Nino Niederreiter, who made a move from backhand to forehand in front of the crease before sliding a pass to Namestnikov, who beat Samuel Ersson to open the scoring.
The Jets carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission and extended it in the second period. The Flyers tried to clear their own zone, but Gabriel Vilardi kept the puck in and set up Scheifele driving to the net, who ripped home a perfectly placed shot for his fourth of the season.
Philadelphia cut into the lead when Owen Tippett drove into the Jets’ zone and snapped a wrist shot past Hellebuyck’s glove.
Late in the middle frame, Morgan Barron, who’s been red hot to start the season, fired a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle after receiving a crisp pass from Kyle Connor. The shot deflected off Noah Cates and in, restoring Winnipeg’s two-goal cushion.
With half a period to play in the third, Scheifele netted his second of the contest on the power play. Kyle Connor set him up beautifully, and Scheifele one-timed it past Ersson. That goal tied him with Blake Wheeler for the most points in franchise history (812).
Matvei Michkov answered late for Philadelphia to make it 4-2, but Tanner Pearson sealed the deal with an empty-netter shortly after, helping Winnipeg improve to 3-1-0 on the young season.
It wasn’t the most action-packed night, both teams finished with fewer than 20 shots (WPG 15, PHI 17), but the Jets capitalized on their chances, making life relatively easy for Hellebuyck despite the modest numbers.
Winnipeg now returns home to face the Nashville Predators on Saturday night before heading back on the road Monday to take on the Calgary Flames. Puck drop Saturday is at 6:00 p.m. CDT on Sportsnet West.
