The Winnipeg Jets knew they didn’t start off on the right foot Tuesday night, being outshot 9-0 at one point in the first period, but that didn’t stop them from taking control of the game after scoring the opening goal late in the first to help them down the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 at Canada Life Centre, their first win on home ice against Vegas in over four years.
Winnipeg started sluggish, but Kyle Connor didn’t look in the rear-view mirror and opened the scoring at 17:25 of the first period. Josh Morrissey skated up the boards on the left side and sent a cross-ice pass to Connor for a one-timer from just below the right dot past Adin Hill for his 32nd of the campaign.
The Jets doubled up on Vegas just over two minutes into the middle frame. After a turnover by Shea Theodore in the defensive zone, Mark Scheifele found Alex Iafallo near the left faceoff dot, where he fired a quick wrist shot past Hill for his 12th.

Just 1:58 later, Cole Perfetti made no mistake on a 3-on-1 to put the home team up by three. Perfetti, Adam Lowry and Gabriel Vilardi broke out on the rush, and Vilardi slid a pass cross-ice to Perfetti, who tapped home his 10th past Hill.
Colton Sissons gave Vegas some life on the power play at 10:29 of the second. His sixth of the season cut the deficit to two.
Scheifele capped off his three-point night, as well as his fourth career Gordie Howe hat trick (a goal, assist, and a fight), with an empty-net goal to seal the 4-1 win. His 32nd tied Connor for the team lead in goals at 18:42.
“I thought, really after the first period, we just closed down their rush game and their o-zone time. They’re obviously a team that likes to make a lot of plays, and they’re very talented in that area,” said Perfetti postgame. “And I thought in the second and third period, we closed on them quick, didn’t give them much, and they were still trying to make plays. I thought we found our offence from that, so we did a good job.”
Winnipeg will conclude its mini two-game homestand on Thursday when they face the Colorado Avalanche for the first of two straight against them. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. CT on TSN3.
