Mark Scheifele scored 1:11 into overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 2–1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Jets (56–22–4) set a franchise record with 116 points to close out their best regular season ever.
Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves in front of a sold-out Canada Life Centre crowd, who chanted “MVP!” all night long. He finishes the season with 47 wins—the most in franchise history—and clinched the William M. Jennings Trophy for Winnipeg, awarded to the team that allowed the fewest goals in the regular season, for the second straight year.
Winnipeg wrapped up their season series against Anaheim with a 1–1–1 record.
Neal Pionk opened the scoring with 6:11 left in the second period, firing a screened shot from the point past Ville Husso. It was Pionk’s 10th goal of the season, tying his personal best.
Cole Perfetti, who assisted on the goal, recorded his first 50-point season. Vladislav Namestnikov also picked up an assist.
Anaheim tied it up at 5:45 of the third. Ian Moore’s shot from the blue line was tipped by Frank Vatrano, and Troy Terry cleaned up the rebound, sliding it into the open side.
Mason Appleton suited up for his 400th NHL game.
The Jets fired 44 shots on goal, dominating long stretches of play. Husso was sharp in net for the Ducks, turning aside 42 of those attempts.
Winnipeg’s power play struggled, going 0-for-4 on the night—a concerning sign heading into the postseason. The man advantage will need to be sharper for Game 1 against St. Louis this weekend.
