Mark Scheifele scored twice and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3–2 in Saturday’s matinee matchup at Canada Life Centre, earning their first win of the season.
Winnipeg’s power play got to work early. Alex Iafallo took a pass in the slot from Kyle Connor and fired a wrist shot past Darcy Kuemper less than five minutes into the opening frame to make it 1–0.
The Jets carried their one-goal lead into the second period, but the Kings quickly responded. Just 50 seconds in, Mikey Anderson’s slap shot from the blue line beat Hellebuyck over his right shoulder, a goal that left the Jets’ netminder visibly surprised.
Halfway through the period, Los Angeles grabbed their first lead on a crisp tic-tac-toe play finished by Adrian Kempe, who tapped it in on his forehand past Hellebuyck’s right pad.
After being heavily outplayed for much of the second, Scheifele took matters into his own hands. Joining the rush with Morgan Barron, Josh Morrissey, and Kyle Connor coming out of the penalty box, Scheifele slipped a backhand shot past Kuemper while falling to the ice to tie it 2–2 late in the frame.
The third period was more evenly matched, but Winnipeg regained the lead when Morrissey fired a point shot that Scheifele redirected past Kuemper with his elite hand-eye coordination, putting the Jets ahead 3–2.
The Jets faced some tense moments late, taking two penalties in the final four minutes. Neal Pionk was called for roughing Brandt Clarke with 3:30 to go, and Tanner Pearson took a tripping minor with just 18 seconds left. However, the penalty kill held firm to secure Winnipeg’s first win of the season.
It was a far stronger effort than Thursday’s loss to Dallas, though there’s still work to do defensively. The Jets need to return to last season’s structure, keeping opponents to the outside and limiting high-danger chances. Too many goals have come from the middle of the ice through two games.
The main concern postgame was Haydn Fleury, who left with a lower-body injury after blocking a one-timer from Kempe on the power play. Fleury briefly returned for the third period but exited again, leaving the Jets with five defencemen. Head coach Scott Arniel said Fleury took the puck off the side of his kneecap, and the severity of the injury remains unknown.
The Jets now hit the road for two straight games, visiting the New York Islanders on Thanksgiving Monday at 12:00 p.m. CDT, followed by the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be available on TSN3.
