Alex Burmistrov’s return to the National Hockey League nearly began on a sour note Thursday night.
The Jets forward delivered a questionable shoulder check to the head of Bruins star Patrice Bergeron in the closing minutes of the opening period, which drew a two-minute minor penalty.
From CSNNE.com:
Bergeron was able to escape the reckless hit without injury and a source indicated to CSNNE.com that no supplemental discipline was expected to be pursued by the Department of Player Safety against the Winnipeg winger. The sense being that the two minute illegal check to the head minor on the play was sufficient penalty for a play that didn’t have enough force to cause any injury.
However, Bruins coach Claude Julien wasn’t as forgiving and hopes the NHL’s Department of Player Safety reviews the check at the very least considering Bergeron has a concussion history.
“It will be interesting to see how that is reviewed,” Julien told CSNNE.com. “Especially when it’s to an elite player in the league that’s had some (concussion) issues in the past. I hope (the Department of Player Safety) looks at it seriously, and in my mind I don’t know why there wouldn’t be further consequences to that.”
Burmistrov, who spent the last two seasons in the KHL with Kazan Ak-Bars, had a goal and an assist in the Jets’ 6-2 win over the Bruins.
