Despite the outrageous cold temperatures in Manitoba right now, Canada Life Centre was sold out Saturday night as fans flooded the building to watch their hometown Winnipeg Jets take on the visiting Detroit Red Wings. But even after scoring first, the Jets allowed five unanswered goals, four of them in the third period, to close out their three-game homestand with a 5-1 loss, dropping to 20-24-7.
Just like Thursday against the Florida Panthers, neither side found the back of the net through 20 minutes, with Detroit holding an 11-9 edge in shots.
Winnipeg opened the scoring at 10:08 of the second period when Morgan Barron won an offensive-zone draw and got the puck back to Logan Stanley at the blue line. Stanley stepped into a slap shot that hit Cole Koepke in front, and while turning, Koepke backhanded the puck past Red Wings goaltender John Gibson for his fourth of the year, and his first since Jan. 9 against the Los Angeles Kings. It marked Winnipeg’s first 5-on-5 goal since Jan. 17.
“Offensive draw, and Barron did a good job of winning it clean back, and we were just getting bodies to the net,” said Koepke. “Stanley did a good job delivering it, and it went off me, kind of landed there perfect for me.”
The Red Wings responded just over five minutes later to tie the game, courtesy of J.T. Compher’s seventh. The puck sat near the side of the net, and Compher kept whacking at it until it finally squeaked past Connor Hellebuyck just as Detroit’s power play expired.
The game remained tied 1-1 after two periods, with Detroit leading the shot totals 23-19.
Compher kicked off Detroit’s four-goal final frame with his second of the night just 1:43 into the period, finishing off a 3-on-2 rush with Emmitt Finnie and James van Riemsdyk on a crisp passing play.
Lucas Raymond extended the Wings’ lead at 8:11 when his shot from in front deflected off Hellebuyck’s stick, popped up, and went in off the crossbar. The play was reviewed for a high stick, as two Detroit players attempted to swat at the puck but both missed, allowing the goal to stand.
Alex DeBrincat iced the game with an empty-net goal at 18:11, and Marco Kasper added another at 18:43 to help the Wings improve to 32-16-5, good for first place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel didn’t hold back postgame, describing his team as too soft.
“We were looking for a pond hockey game. Don’t get hit, don’t hit anybody. Just play an easy, soft game,” said Arniel. “That’s pretty much what we did for two periods, and it exploded in the third period.”
Things only get tougher for the Jets as they now head out on the road for four straight games, beginning Tuesday in New Jersey against the Devils. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
