It’s a big night for the Winnipeg Jets, not just because they’re facing the Edmonton Oilers in a preseason matchup, but because Jonathan Toews will be playing a full game for the first time in over two years. While it’s only preseason, tonight’s game will be a key chance to see how Toews performs.
The Jets are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss in their preseason opener on Sunday. Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with Morgan Barron scoring on the power play, followed by a goal from Danny Zhilkin. Minnesota chipped away, scoring in the second and tying it late in the third to force overtime. Yakov Trenin completed the comeback with his second goal of the game, beating Jets and Winnipeg native goaltender Isaac Poulter, who had replaced Thomas Milic in the third period.
Edmonton split their squad in Sunday’s opener, sending one group to Calgary and keeping the other at home. In Calgary, the Oilers shutout the Flames 3-0, while in Edmonton, the Flames won in overtime on a goal from Morgan Frost.
Tonight we’ll see a different Jets lineup, though six players from the Minnesota game will return to the ice.
Here is the roster for the second game of the preseason confirmed with the release of the roster by the Jets:
Forwards (13): Gustav Nyquist, Jonathan Toews, Mason Shaw, Parker Ford, Brayden Yager, Colby Barlow, Fabian Wagner, Jacob Julien, Tanner Pearson, Walker Duehr, Nikita Chibrikov, Cole Perfetti and Brad Lambert.
Defence (8): Luke Schenn, Colin Miller, Ville Heinola, Dylan Samberg, Kale Clague, Elias Salomonsson, Ashton Sautner and Dylan Anhorn.
Goalies (2): Eric Comrie and Domenic DiVincentiis
Brad Lambert’s status is still unknown after he was pulled from the game on Sunday by the concussion spotter, but there will likely be an update some time this afternoon.
Projected lineup:
Perfetti – Toews – Nyquist
Pearson – Yager – Chibrikov
Barlow – Ford – Lambert
Shaw – Julien – Duehr
Samberg – Salomonsson
Heinola – Schenn
Clague – Miller
Comrie
