After squashing the New Jersey Devils on Friday night, the Winnipeg Jets look to finish their four-game road trip with at least three wins out of the four matchups. This afternoon, they face the Carolina Hurricanes at the Lenovo Center.
In Friday’s game, the Jets scored six goals, each from a different player in the lineup. Josh Morrissey extended the power-play goal streak to three games with his 10th goal of the season. Brandon Tanev, acquired earlier that day, made his “re”-debut with the Jets. Although he didn’t register any points, he delivered a solid performance. Connor Hellebuyck had a relatively easy night, stopping 22 of 23 shots from New Jersey, posting a .957 save percentage (SV%).
Carolina hasn’t played since Thursday when they faced the Boston Bruins. The game was tied 2-2 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period when a Boston defenceman, Nikita Zadorov, had his stick break during a pass attempt, handing the puck to Seth Jarvis. Jarvis capitalized on the opportunity, beating Joonas Korpisalo to score the game-winning goal. Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made 32 stops, earning a .941 SV% in the victory. Carolina looks to extend their winning streak to four games.
These two teams met last month in Winnipeg, where Eric Comrie shut out the Hurricanes, leading the Jets to a 3-0 victory. Nino Niederreiter and Neal Pionk both scored power-play goals, making it 2-0. Rasmus Kupari added some insurance late in the third period to make it 3-0, and the Jets held on for the win.
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to start in goal for Winnipeg. The game against New Jersey was one of the rare “easy” nights for Hellebuyck, who has been a game-changer for the Jets all season long. This season, he has a 37-8-3 record, a .927 SV%, a 1.99 GAA, and 6 shutouts. Impressively, all of these stats currently lead all NHL goaltenders.
Frederik Andersen is expected to start for Carolina. Despite dealing with some injury issues, Andersen has proven when healthy that he’s still one of the NHL’s top goaltenders. In 12 games this season, he has a 7-5-0 record, a .911 SV%, a 2.18 GAA, and one shutout.
