After an embarrassing game on Monday, the Winnipeg Jets look to get revenge on the Utah Hockey Club tonight as they will face off for the second time this week tonight at Canada Life Centre.
The Jets had a strong showing earlier this week, sweeping their season series against the Colorado Avalanche. Neal Pionk’s overtime goal lifted the Jets to a 3-2 victory, improving their record to 32-14-3. They currently sit second in the NHL standings and are tied for the league lead in wins with 32.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel described the team’s performance on Monday as “embarrassing,” following a 5-2 loss to Utah. Morrissey addressed the challenge after the game, emphasizing how the team plans to bounce back: “Yeah, I think it’s good. Coach challenges us, we’ve asked for that. We want to be pushed like an elite team, and we’ve been an elite team this year.”
Utah enters tonight’s matchup playing the second half of a back-to-back. Last night, they shut out the Minnesota Wild 4-0 in St. Paul, extending their winning streak to three games. Barrett Hayton scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season, while Karel Vejmelka stopped 26 shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
In Monday’s game between these two teams, Utah held a 4-0 lead in the third period before the Jets mounted a comeback, cutting the lead to 4-2 late in the game. However, Utah hung on for a 5-2 win. Heading into tonight’s game, the Jets are 1-1-0 in their season series with Utah. This will be the third of four meetings between the teams, with the final matchup scheduled for April 5th in Utah.
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to start in goal for the Jets for the third consecutive game. He stopped 25 of 27 shots against Colorado on Wednesday, posting a .926 SV%. Hellebuyck currently leads the NHL in SV% (.927), GAA (2.02), and shutouts (6).
For Utah, Connor Ingram will get the start after Vejmelka played last night. Ingram previously played in the 5-2 win over the Jets, recording a .920 SV%. He has an 8-5-3 record and a .822 SV% this season.
