After ending their four-game road trip on a losing note with a 4-2 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Winnipeg Jets will look to get back into the win column tonight against the New York Rangers at home.
Ultimately, Winnipeg finished their Eastern Conference road trip with a 2-2-0 record, which isn’t too shabby. They saw it come to an end with the loss in Carolina. Alex Iafallo hit double digits with his 10th goal of the season, and Adam Lowry scored his 14th late in the contest. Connor Hellebuyck recorded 23 saves, posting a .885 SV%.
New York is currently riding a three-game losing streak. Their most recent loss came against the Columbus Blue Jackets, where Columbus dominated 7-3, almost like scoring a touchdown and a field goal in football. Artemi Panarin scored his 28th of the season, while former Brandon Wheat King Braden Schneider netted his fourth, and Chris Kreider scored his 18th. Veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick recorded 21 saves, posting a .750 SV%.
Tonight’s game will wrap up the season series between Winnipeg and New York. The teams last played on Nov. 12th in New York, where Winnipeg dominated the Rangers 6-3, becoming the fastest team in NHL history to reach 15 wins in a season. As they have all season long, the Jets’ trio of Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Gabriel Vilardi thrived. Connor posted two goals and three points, Scheifele netted two goals, and Vilardi scored one goal. Connor was named the First Star of the Game, and Scheifele earned Second Star honors.
Connor Hellebuyck is projected to start in net for Winnipeg. Despite a less-than-ideal performance in Carolina, Hellebuyck has been dominant all season. He currently leads the NHL with a 37-9-3 record, a .926 SV%, a 2.02 GAA, and 6 shutouts.
Igor Shesterkin is projected to start for New York. Although Shesterkin has had an off year, so has the team in front of him. This season, he has a 21-21-4 record, a .905 SV%, a 2.89 GAA, and 4 shutouts.
Luke Schenn, who was acquired at the trade deadline, will make his Jets debut tonight, according to head coach Scott Arniel.
