The Winnipeg Jets (38-14-3) will take the ice for their final game before the 4 Nations break, facing off against the New York Islanders (25-21-7) at Canada Life Centre this evening.
Winnipeg aims to extend its winning streak to eight games after a 3-0 shutout victory on home ice against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. The shutout was Eric Comrie’s first of the season, as he stopped 29 shots. The Jets’ special teams were crucial in the victory, with the second power-play unit striking twice. Nino Niederreiter scored the first, while Neal Pionk followed up with the second goal.
The New York Islanders, who have been on a strong run in their last ten games (10-2-0), are coming off a 2-1 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. Despite being nearly tripled in shots (14 shots on net vs. 34 for Vegas), the Islanders managed to secure the win, with Ilya Sorokin standing on his head by stopping 33 of 34 shots (.971 SV%).
The Jets and Islanders have not faced off yet this season. Their last meeting was in March 2024 in Long Island, where the Islanders dominated the Jets 6-3, leading 5-1 at one point. It’s certainly a result the Jets will look to avoid replicating tonight.
Connor Hellebuyck will start for Winnipeg. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner last played on Feb. 1 against the Washington Capitals, where some may consider it an off night for him. He stopped 25 of 29 shots in the 5-4 overtime win, recording a .852 SV%.
Ilya Sorokin will start again for the Islanders. After his stellar performance against Vegas, he’ll look to carry that momentum into tonight’s matchup. On the season, Sorokin has a 20-14-4 record, a 2.58 GAA, a .910 SV%, and 3 shutouts.
