The Winnipeg Jets will finally get a chance to settle back at home as they kick off a four-game homestand this afternoon against the Buffalo Sabres at Canada Life Centre.
It’s safe to say Winnipeg hasn’t been too proud of their recent performances, particularly the lackluster showing in Vancouver and stretches of inconsistency in Edmonton. This afternoon presents an opportunity for the Jets to get back on track with a week-long homestand and, more importantly, a chance to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They will clinch a spot if they secure at least one point against Buffalo or if St. Louis loses to Nashville in any fashion.
Kyle Connor was the overtime hero in Edmonton, securing a 4-3 victory for the Jets in their last outing. Winnipeg led late in the third period thanks to a Brandon Tanev marker, but Zach Hyman and the Oilers forced extra time with a late equalizer. Connor Hellebuyck faced 24 shots, making 21 saves for a .875 SV%. His goalie partner, Eric Comrie, is projected to get the start this afternoon.
The Jets will be facing a Sabres squad that played just yesterday in Minnesota, suffering a 4-1 defeat. Buffalo went with an 11/7 lineup and started Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in goal, which suggests that veteran and Manitoba-born goaltender James Reimer is likely to get the nod between the pipes this afternoon.
