The Winnipeg Jets are looking to end their three-game winless streak in the final game before the NHL trade deadline. They’ll face off against the Philadelphia Flyers for the second and final time in five days.
The Jets’ first game of this four-game Eastern road trip didn’t go as planned. They battled the Islanders in Long Island but ultimately lost 3-2 in regulation. The Jets found themselves trailing 2-0 early in the second period. They broke through midway through the frame with Josh Morrissey’s 9th goal of the season on the power play—their first power-play goal in nearly a month—cutting the deficit to 2-1. New York restored their two-goal lead early in the third period, making it 3-1. The Jets kept it interesting, as Nikolaj Ehlers scored his 19th of the season on the power play at 8:09 remaining. Connor Hellebuyck finished the night with 26 saves and a .897 save percentage.
Meanwhile, the Flyers suffered an embarrassing defeat to Calgary on Tuesday. Despite attempting to make a comeback, the Flames dominated, piling on four goals in the first period, one in the second, and an empty-netter in the third to win 6-3. Sam Ersson allowed 3 goals on 5 shots in the opening frame before being pulled. Ivan Fedotov took over, stopping 26 of 28 shots for a .929 save percentage.
The Jets will be looking for revenge in this matchup, as they lost to the Flyers 2-1 in a shootout just five days ago. Mark Scheifele opened the scoring with his 34th of the season in the first period. The Flyers tied it 1-1 in the middle frame with Jamie Drysdale’s 3rd goal of the season. The game went to overtime, but neither team could score, and Philadelphia eventually won in the shootout, thanks to Russian rookie Matvei Michkov.
Dylan Samberg is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing the game on Long Island due to personal matters.
Given that this is a back-to-back situation, and the Jets face the Devils tomorrow evening, Eric Comrie will likely start tonight against a weaker Flyers squad, so that gives Hellebuyck the game tomorrow. Comrie through 15 games this year has a 6-8-1 record, including a .911 SV%, a 2.56 GAA and one shutout.
Ersson will start for Philadelphia, and I’m sure he is hoping for a better outcome in tonight’s game. This season he has an 18-10-4 record, a .890 SV% as well as a 2.91 GAA.
