The Winnipeg Jets aim to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 11 games as they face a back-to-back road challenge tonight in Ottawa against the Senators and tomorrow in Nashville against the Predators.
On Monday, the Jets managed to secure a 2-1 overtime victory over the NHL’s worst team, the San Jose Sharks. Despite hitting multiple posts and facing a strong performance from Sharks goalie Vitek Vanecek, the Jets were down 1-0 until just 26 seconds remaining in the third period. That’s when defenceman Josh Morrissey tied the game to force overtime. Mark Scheifele scored the overtime winner, passing Ilya Kovalchuk for the most goals in Jets/Thrashers history (329).
The Ottawa Senators last played on Saturday, suffering a 5-2 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens. Former Jet Patrik Laine scored the game-winning goal on a power play to give the Canadiens a 3-2 lead in the first period. The Senators were also without their captain, Brady Tkachuk, but he is expected to be in the lineup tonight against the Jets.
The two Canadian teams last met in December in Winnipeg, where the Jets rallied for a 4-2 victory. Ottawa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, but the Jets’ top players — Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Gabriel Vilardi, and Nikolaj Ehlers — each contributed to four unanswered goals past Senators goalie Mads Sogaard to secure the win. The Jets lead the season series 1-0.
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to start in goal for the Jets for the second consecutive game. In Monday’s victory over San Jose, he faced just 18 shots, making 17 saves for a .944 save percentage. While the number of shots was low, the quality of chances was high, with San Jose creating breakaways, 2-on-1s, and solid power play opportunities.
Linus Ullmark will likely start for the Senators, despite a tough outing in Montreal. Ullmark was pulled in the second period after allowing five goals on 15 shots. Anton Forsberg replaced him and stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief.
