Tonight marks the second half of a back-to-back and the third game of this Eastern road trip for the Winnipeg Jets as they take on the New Jersey Devils. The Jets will look to extend their winning streak to two games after a dominant performance against the Philadelphia Flyers last night.
Less than 24 hours ago, Winnipeg cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Flyers at home. The power play was perfect, going 2-for-2 with goals from Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers. Kyle Connor and Adam Lowry also found the back of the net, helping to make it 4-0 at one point. The Jets’ top line trio of Scheifele, Connor, and Gabriel Vilardi combined for an impressive 8 points. Eric Comrie had another solid outing, stopping 21 shots for a .955 save percentage and earning the Second Star of the Game.
The Devils, on the other hand, last played on Tuesday in a tight 4-3 regulation loss to Dallas. New Jersey found themselves trailing by two goals at several points in the game, but fought back to tie the game at three. Nico Hischier’s power-play goal and Brett Pesce’s third of the season tied it up after they were down 3-1. However, Thomas Harley scored the game-winner for Dallas with just five seconds remaining, leaving the Devils stunned. New Jersey goaltender Jacob Markstrom faced 21 shots, stopping 17, and posted a .810 save percentage.
This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The last time they met was on March 21, 2024, in New Jersey, when the Devils dominated Winnipeg 4-1, outshooting them 41-19. Ehlers scored the lone goal for the Jets, while Jack Hughes netted two goals for the Devils. With that game in the rearview mirror, the Jets may feel some urgency to avenge last season’s defeat, though it remains to be seen how much that game will factor into tonight’s matchup.
Vezina Trophy favorite Connor Hellebuyck will start in net for the Jets tonight. Hellebuyck last played in New York on Tuesday in a 3-2 regulation loss, stopping 26 of 29 shots for a .897 save percentage.
Markstrom is expected to be between the pipes for the Devils. The 35-year-old goaltender has a record of 21-11-5 this season, with a .910 save percentage and a 2.24 goals-against average.
