It’s been nonstop for the Winnipeg Jets. With last night’s 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators, they’re now riding an 11-game winning streak as they head into tonight’s second half of a back-to-back, facing the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena.
In last night’s game, the Jets scored two quick goals in the first period, with Cole Perfetti and Mason Appleton finding the back of the net. Kyle Connor then buried his 31st of the season to make it 3-0 in the second frame. Mark Scheifele sealed the win with an empty-netter, his 33rd goal of the season. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 24 of 25 shots, recording a .960 SV%.
Nashville played on Tuesday, where they ultimately fell 4-1 to the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers. Once again, their offense was nonexistent. Even defenceman Luke Schenn had something to say about his club following the game:
“I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a group like this that literally can’t score a goal.”
Offense has been hard to come by for Nashville, especially when they only registered 18 shots on goal through 60 minutes of hockey, as they did in that game. Their goaltending didn’t help either—Juuse Saros made 21 saves on 25 shots for a .840 SV%.
The season series between the Jets and Predators is currently 2-1 in favor of Winnipeg. With tonight being the final matchup of the season series, Nashville could tie things up, or the Jets could take home bragging rights over their division rival. These two teams last met on Jan. 7th in Winnipeg, where the Jets led 3-0 for most of the game before eventually winning 5-2.
Eric Comrie will start tonight for the Jets, as it’s a back-to-back. Comrie last played against St. Louis this past Saturday, making 21 saves in a 4-3 shootout win, recording a .870 SV%. This season, Comrie has been a reliable backup. Through 14 games played, he holds a 6-7-1 record, a solid .910 SV%, and a 2.59 GAA, with one shutout.
Juuse Saros is expected to start for Nashville. He’ll be looking for a bounce-back performance after allowing 4 goals on 25 shots against Florida on Tuesday. Despite Nashville’s struggles, Saros has maintained respectable numbers, posting a .899 SV%, a 2.93 GAA, and 4 shutouts through 42 games this season.
