Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel announced some significant news regarding the team’s defence on Wednesday morning, something the club will have to battle through the next little while.
“We’ve got some bad news going here,” Arniel said following practice. “(Haydn) Fleury will go week-to-week, (Colin) Miller will go week-to-week, and (Neal) Pionk will go week-to-week. So, three defencemen down.”
Pionk’s absence doesn’t come as a huge surprise. He didn’t play last Friday against the Los Angeles Kings but returned for the past two games against the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. While he looked a bit off against the Islanders, that didn’t stop him from logging 20:21 of ice time.
“It’s been kind of going on,” Arniel said. “And then last night he fell and kind of reaggravated it a little bit more.”
Miller had stepped in for Pionk alongside Dylan Samberg against the Kings before suffering an injury in that game, while Fleury remains sidelined following the incident against the Vegas Golden Knights last week.
Isaak Phillips had already been recalled by the Jets. The 24-year-old will likely get an opportunity in the coming days to make his Jets debut. Elias Salomonsson was also recalled Wednesday and is expected to draw into the lineup Thursday in Minnesota.
There was some positive news on the injury front as well. Morgan Barron, who hasn’t played since last Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers, skated without a non-contact jersey at Wednesday’s practice.
“He’s not cleared. That was his first day without the (non-contact) jersey,” Arniel said. “He could be a player tomorrow. I’ve got to see how he makes out after today. Wakes up tomorrow and see if he’s good to go.”
The Jets will look to extend their winning streak to four games Thursday night against the Wild.
