“I don’t have any words for this,” Nikolaj Ehlers said, still kind of in disbelief after the final buzzer. “To beat Canada at home and go through is one of the biggest things I’ve done in my career, so it’s amazing.”
Ehlers was literally playing for the Winnipeg Jets last Sunday — a tough loss to the Dallas Stars that ended the Jets’ season. But the moment that door closed, another one opened. Playing at the World Championship on home ice? No hesitation.
He flew overseas and joined Denmark just in time for their last group-stage game against Germany, a shootout win that punched their ticket to the quarterfinals. Waiting for them there? Team Canada.
No one expected Denmark to win this one. But the Danes had a plan, stuck to it, and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in their hockey history.
“We knew from the beginning they were going to have a lot of pressure on our net,” Ehlers said. “So we just tried to play tight, keep them to the outside, and I thought (Frederik) Dichow was unreal in net. Then somehow we scored two late goals.”
It was Ehlers who tied the game — a quick wrister from the point that found its way through traffic and past Jordan Binnington with 2:17 left. Then, with under a minute to go, Nicklas Jensen fed Nick Olesen alone in front, and he buried it for the game-winner.
“Unbelievable,” Ehlers said. “I was almost crying on the ice. Being at home in front of the Danish fans, hearing the anthem… it was great.”
This is the first time ever that Denmark has made the semifinals at Worlds. They’ll fly to Stockholm in the morning and get ready for Switzerland on Saturday. The Swiss beat them 5-2 in the group stage — but that was before Ehlers arrived.
“I mean, we just beat Canada,” Ehlers said with a smile. “We’ll celebrate for an hour or two, then start getting ready.”
