On this day: Teemu Selanne scores 54th goal of the season

Mar 2, 2018, 13:59 EST
It was 25 years ago today that a rookie named Teemu Selanne scored his 54th goal of the season and finished it off with an epic goal celebration that will live on forever.
Back in 1992-93, the Winnipeg Jets were lucky enough to have Teemu Selanne dawning the blue and white and being able to watch as he went on to have a rookie season for the ages. In 84 games played, Selanne shattered the rookie scoring record with 76 goals and would go on to finish the year with 132 points. It was a performance that has never been duplicated since, creating a rookie record that may never be touched again. He was later rewarded with the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year.
Unfortunately, Selanne’s career with the Jets ended midway through the 1995-96 season after he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky, and a third-round pick in the 1996 NHL Draft. At the time, Selanne was said to be so upset about the trade that he left practice without speaking to anyone. It was the end of an era and a sad day for Jets fans everywhere.
Despite only playing with the Jets for three and a half seasons, Selanne remains a fan favourite and has cemented his place in history. With this being the 25th anniversary of that fateful goal, we wanted to quickly post something to honour the memory of what should be known as Selanne Day in Winnipeg.
