After a defensive 3-0 loss on Thursday night against the Seattle Kraken, the Jets reset for another home game tonight against the Calgary Flames. The now 5-2-0 Jets took on the 1-6-1 Flames at Canada Life Centre, looking to begin a new win streak as the home stand continues. On a night where Canada watched the Toronto Blue Jays win game 1 of the World Series, Winnipeg fans also got to celebrate a Jets victory. The Jets star players were one of the bigger stories tonight, and despite it being a night full of penalties, the Jets found ways to get enough offence to hold on for the win.
Tonight’s Jets lineup was similar to last game, with Nino Niederreiter staying on the 2nd line with Gustav Nyquist and Jonathan Toews. Nikita Chibrikov is back on the 3rd line, and the rest of the line combinations remained the same from last game. Eric Comrie got the start in goal, looking to build off a strong performance in his one and only prior start this season. Spoiler alert, Comrie was great again tonight.
1st Period
Only 19 seconds into the game, Nikita Chibrikov was called for holding against Nazem Kadri. This would be the first of a lot (I lost track) of penalties throughout this game. The Jets number one ranked penalty kill (sitting at 96.4%) went to work early, and shut down the Flames 1st powerplay opportunity.
The Jets have been taking too many penalties in the past few games, and it cost them early tonight. Dylan DeMelo was called for tripping, giving the Flames an early 2nd powerplay. After some nice puck movement from the Flames, Zayne Parekh and Morgan Frost set up Nazem Kadri, who snapped one up top corner past Comrie, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead.
One minute later, Adam Klapka and Logan Stanley dropped the gloves for a heavyweight tilt near centre ice, which was worthy of a second watch. Stanley was clearing trying to fire up the Jets and the crowd as the Jets weren’t off to an ideal start tonight.
A few minutes later, the Jets got their 1st powerplay of the night after Matt Coronato was called for interference. The Jets failed to generate any good chances on this advatnage, and late into the 1st period the Flames were outshooting the Jets 6-3. With 5 minutes to play in the 1st, the Jets got another powerplay opportunity, but nothing came of it. The 1st period ended with the Jets down 1-0, while trailing in shots on goal 9-5.
2nd Period
The Jets were looking to come out with more energy in the 2nd, and they did just that. After a few good chances, Kyle Connor tied this game at 1. After Ryan Lomberg and Nikita Chibrikov took cross-checking penalties on each other. Dylan DeMelo sent the puck up the ice, and Josh Morrissey began a two on one. After waiting and looking like he would shoot, Morrissey sent it over to Connor, who snapped it into the net past Dustin Wolf.
4-ON-4 MAGIC 🪄😮💨
Just over a minute later the Jets took a 2-1 lead. Morrissey worked the puck nears the boards after a faceoff win, before passing one towards the net. Jonathan Toews was in front right close to the crease, and he tipped the puck past Wolf to give the Jets their first lead of the night.
JT IS RIGHT AT HOME 🏠✈️
The Flames would unsuccessfully challenge that Toews was interfering with Wolf, resulting in a 2 minute delay of game penalty. The Jets were unsuccessful on the powerplay, but just seconds after the powerplay ended the Jets got another man advantage. Powerplay number 4 was successful, and after some good puck movement, Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele set up Gabriel Vilardi in front, who backhanded it past Wolf for his long-awaited 1st of the season.
Everybody is DANCING 🕺🕺🕺
The Flames would get one back towards the later part of the 2nd period. Samuel Honzek moved the puck up to Blake Coleman, who made a nice drop pass to Mikael Backlund. The Flames Captain was sent in alone on and he made a nice move to fool Eric Comrie as he made it a 3-2 game. This eventful 2nd period was settling down, but the Jets got yet another powerplay with 2 minutes to play.
Alex Iafallo was set up by Mark Scheifele and Gabriel Vilardi, and he wristed one nicely past Wolf to make it 4-2 Jets.
PURE SWAGGER 😤
Nino Niederreiter took a roughing penalty at the end of the 2nd period, but it was a successful 2nd period for the Jets all around. After 40 minutes played, the shots on goal were 21-18 Jets.
3rd Period
This night full of penalties continued just 55 seconds into the 3rd when Calgary took their 6th penalty. The Jets got a shortened man advantage but were unable to capitalize on this chance. Tanner Pearson and Jonathan Huberdeau took penalties almost 3 minutes apart, but both teams couldn’t strike on the man advantage.
A few minutes after the penalties settled down, Blake Coleman made it a 4-3 game after a somewhat unexpecting pass from Backlund would find it’s way to Coleman in front. The wrister got past Comrie and suddenly this was a one goal game with just 11 minutes to go.
The trips to the penalty box continued for both teams, as Niederreiter took a penalty followed by a Coronato penalty 13 seconds later. Nothing too exciting happened on the 4 on 4, and this game then entered the last part of the game. Haydn Fleury gave the Flames a chance to tie this game with a final powerplay with just under 3 minutes left, but the Jets penalty killers improved to 5/6 on the night.
With 8 seconds to play with the Flames looking to send this game to overtime, Vladislav Namestnikov fired the puck down the ice into the empty net. The Jets held on for the 5-3 win, sending Jets fans home happy on this Friday night. Final shots on goal were 33-32 for the Flames, as Comrie stood tall in net with a 30 save performance.
