Goalies have been taking over social media this week with NHL Goalie Week, and the NHL Network decided to join in on the fun by ranking their top 10 goalies in the league.
The NHL Network has been busy with rankings this offseason. They’ve already put out their top 10 centres and defencemen, along with their top 20 wingers, all of which stirred up plenty of debate. Now, their top 10 goalies list is doing the same, especially with Connor Hellebuyck sitting at the top.
Looking at the regular season, there’s really no doubt Hellebuyck belongs at No. 1. Still, a lot of people bring up the playoffs and argue he shouldn’t hold that spot, which I think is valid to a certain extent. But the way he bounced back in Round 2 against Dallas, along with his overtime performances in Game 7 against the St. Louis Blues, showed he just needed a confidence boost to return to his true Vezina/Hart caliber form.
The top 3 overall look pretty accurate. You could flip Andrei Vasilevskiy and Igor Shesterkin for the No. 2 and 3 spots, but both are placed fairly. Vasilevskiy continues to prove he’s one of the best in the league, while Shesterkin, despite a so-called down year, still did all he could behind a struggling Rangers team. It’s similar to Juuse Saros in Nashville: an outstanding goalie carrying a weak Predators roster. For me, Saros is still without question a top-10 goalie.
NHL Network’s full list of top 10 goalies:
  1. Connor Hellebuyck (WPG)
  2. Andrei Vasilevskiy (TBL)
  3. Igor Shesterkin (NYR)
  4. Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA)
  5. Jake Oettinger (DAL)
  6. Ilya Sorokin (NYI)
  7. Jordan Binnington (STL)
  8. Filip Gustavsson (MIN)
  9. Darcy Kuemper (LAK)
  10. Linus Ullmark (OTT)
We’re also just 17 days away from the Jets kicking off their preseason at home against the Minnesota Wild. Hang in there, Jets fans, hockey season is right around the corner!
