The Winnipeg Jets have finally found their first win of the 2024-25 NHL Preseason.
Last night, a heavy veteran filled Jets squad dominated the Edmonton Oilers (Bakersfield Condors) by a whopping 6-1 score.
With the Oilers lack of star power, that gave the Jets to set the tone right from the start of the game.
In the early stages of the game, David Gustafsson would find the crossbar off an amazing feed from Josh Morrissey, before shortly after Nikolaj Ehlers would make it 1-0 for the home team.
It was a pretty tic-tac-toe play between the Jets’ second line. Brad Lambert was crashing hard to the net, Ehlers got Vladislav Namestnikov the puck, Namestnikov dished it back to Ehlers, who put it right past a scattered Stuart Skinner with 12:11 left to play in the period.
The second period was very similar, as superstar forward Kyle Connor turned up the intensity on a fancy breakaway finish, doubling the Jets’ lead.
The Jets’ would go on to have multiple deadly opportunities to extend the lead, but Stuart Skinner and the Oilers’ defence stood their ground blocking pucks.
But the Oilers’ defence could only do so much, as another minor penalty led to a Colin Miller power play marker.
Neal Pionk picked up the puck from Lambert, who then passed it over to Miller, who unloaded a heavy wrist shot on net that beat Skinner clean, extending Winnipeg’s lead to 3 goals.
The home team wasn’t just done yet, as Pionk added to the onslaught with a strong drive to the net, dangling through the Oilers’ defence, before tucking the puck in past Skinner on his backhand.
“The blind squirrel finds the nut once in a while,” Pionk joked postgame.
Winnipeg outshot Edmonton 15-5 in the frame, pulling ahead 27-13 through 40 minutes of play.
With Skinner getting pulled, it only took 1:13 into the third period for Lambert to beat his replacement, Colin Delia, short glove side, making it 5-0 Winnipeg.
Neal Pionk would pick up his fourth point of the night on Lambert’s wrist shot from the top of circle goal.
Jets’ captain, Adam Lowry, would add to the scoresheet, ambushing Delia off the puck, cashing in on a wraparound tally with eight minutes left to play in the final frame.
Unfortunately for Kaapo Kähkönen, Edmonton’s Connor Brown, would find the back of the net, spoiling his shutout with 3:28 remaining in the game, as he deflected a long-range point shot that found the fivehole. Kähkönen stopped 26 out of the 27 shots he faced, for a solid .963 SV%.
Next up for the Jets is a Friday night matchup with the Minnesota Wild. Puck drop for that game is at 7:00 pm CDT
