As the Winnipeg Jets prepare for Game 1 of their second-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars, uncertainty surrounds the availability of three players. During an optional skate Tuesday morning, star forward Mark Scheifele and defencemen Josh Morrissey and Logan Stanley all wore yellow non-contact jerseys — typically a sign that players are nearing a return but have yet to be cleared for full contact.
Morrissey and Stanley exited the ice before the main group took to the ice, while Scheifele remained and skated with the team.
Head coach Scott Arniel confirmed that all three are considered game-time decisions for Wednesday night’s opener at Canada Life Centre.
Scheifele has not played since suffering an injury in Game 5 of the Jets’ first-round series against the St. Louis Blues. However, the veteran centre has now skated for two straight days, including full participation on Tuesday, offering some hope for his return. Before going down, Scheifele was a major offensive contributor, recording six points (two goals, four assists) in five playoff games. He also had a career-best regular season with 87 points, finishing second in team scoring behind Kyle Connor and playing a key role in helping Winnipeg claim the Presidents’ Trophy.
Morrissey, the team’s top defenceman, was knocked out early in Game 7 against St. Louis after taking a hit in the first period. Stanley, meanwhile, missed the series finale with an undisclosed injury. Tuesday’s session marked the first time either defenceman had been seen on the ice since their respective injuries.
With puck drop looming, the Jets are hoping to have their lineup at full strength for the start of a highly anticipated series against a strong Dallas squad. Final decisions on player availability will be made following Wednesday’s morning skate and pregame evaluations.
Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CT at Canada Life Centre.
