Last night, Josh Morrissey achieved a significant milestone, passing Dustin Byfuglien to become the all-time points leader among defencemen in Jets 2.0 history. Morrissey now sits 6th on the franchise’s overall leaderboard with 364 points (77G, 287A).
The record-breaking point came in the middle frame when Nino Niederreiter led the attack into the Oilers’ zone and set up Morrissey for a spectacular redirection past Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner, tying the game at two.
The Calgary native has 11 goals and 43 assists, totaling 54 points through 69 games this season—just 22 points shy of his career-high 76 points in the 2022-23 campaign. Once again, Morrissey is firmly in the Norris Trophy conversation, awarded annually to the NHL’s top defenseman during the regular season.
Drafted 13th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Morrissey made his NHL debut on March 5, 2016, in a home matchup against the Montreal Canadiens. His first career NHL goal came on November 15, 2016, in a 4–0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Morrissey completed his first full NHL season with 26 points (6G, 20A) in 82 games and followed that with another 26-point season in 81 games, helping the Jets qualify for the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Morrissey is often asked about that memorable 2018 playoff run. “We had a special group that year, on and off the ice,” Morrissey said. “That year was my second year in the league, so to get to play with that group and learn from them was outstanding. I have a lot of great memories, forged some really good friendships that have lasted… so I look back fondly on that year, for sure, and I’m just appreciative for those guys taking me under their wing.”
On September 12, 2019, Morrissey signed an 8-year, $50 million extension with the Jets, carrying an AAV of $6.25 million. Shortly after, on October 1, 2019, just prior to the 2019–20 season, Morrissey was named an alternate captain of the Jets.
