The Manitoba Moose headed to Tucson for a pair of back-to-back games Oct. 28-29 to close out their six-game road trip, before returning home for two against the Texas Stars Nov. 2-3 at Canada Life Centre.
Tuesday, Oct. 28 – Manitoba 2, Tucson 0
Manitoba snapped their five-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Roadrunners, as Thomas Milic earned his first shutout of the season by turning aside 26 shots.
Samuel Fagemo scored the eventual game-winner on the power play in the second period, while Jaret Anderson-Dolan sealed the two points with an empty-net goal late in the third. Manitoba outshot Tucson by a wild 51-26 margin.
Wednesday, Oct. 29 – Manitoba 4, Tucson 3
These two clubs went right back at it the following night. The Moose trailed 1-0 after the first frame, but Anderson-Dolan tied it midway through the second.
Tucson regained the lead on a power play tally from Cameron Hebig, but Manitoba responded less than two minutes later with a shorthanded goal from Phillip Di Giuseppe.
Early in the third, Kale Clague blasted a point shot on the power play to give Manitoba their first lead of the night at 3-2. Moments later, captain Mason Shaw netted his first of the season to extend the lead to 4-2.
Hebig struck again late on the power play to bring Tucson within one, and the tension spiked through the roof when Walker Duehr missed an empty Tucson net on a breakaway with just over a minute left. Fortunately, the Moose held on for a 4-3 win. Domenic DiVincentiis made 29 saves in the victory.
Sunday, Nov. 2 – Texas 2, Manitoba 1 (OT)
The Moose looked to extend their winning streak to three games as they began a four-game set with the Texas Stars, while Texas searched for their first win of the season.
Both teams had chances early, but the first period ended scoreless.
Texas opened the scoring 4:36 into the second period, with Samu Tuomaala recording his first of the season.
Just under five minutes into the final frame, Clague tied the game 1-1 with his second goal in as many games, unleashing a blast from the blue line that cleanly beat Stars goaltender Remi Poirier.
YUM YUM EAT EM UP!!!
Manitoba was handed a four-minute power play late in regulation but couldn’t convert, sending the contest to overtime. It took only 30 seconds for the Stars to end it, as Artem Shlaine netted the game-winner.
Milic made 23 stops in the loss, and Manitoba still managed to extend their point streak to four games with the overtime result.
Monday, Nov. 3 – Texas 3, Manitoba 0
The Moose faced Texas in a rematch the following night at Canada Life Centre, looking to extend their point streak to four games and get back in the win column.
Manitoba generated solid offensive looks in the first period but couldn’t capitalize, as both teams remained deadlocked 0-0 after 20 minutes.
Texas broke through late in the second, with Ayrton Martino scoring his first of the season to give the Stars a 1-0 lead, identical to Sunday’s matchup after two periods.
With 10:01 left in the third, Cameron Hughes doubled the Star’s lead on the power play, firing a shot past the glove of DiVincentiis. Despite numerous chances in the final frame, Manitoba couldn’t solve Poirier, and Shlaine sealed the win with an empty-netter for his third goal of the season.
Texas held on for a 3-0 victory, handing Manitoba their second straight home loss and ending their four-game point streak.
“I thought in the third period we had a good push and tons of chances,” said Danny Zhilkin following the loss. “But at the end of the day, we lost the game and didn’t score any goals, so we weren’t good enough.”
The four-game series between the Moose and Stars now shifts to Texas for games on Nov. 7-8.
