The Manitoba Moose, for the second consecutive weekend, played back-to-back road games, facing the Grand Rapids Griffins for the third straight matchup on Friday before taking on the Chicago Wolves the following night.
Friday, Oct. 24 – Grand Rapids 4, Manitoba 0
The Moose were hoping to salvage at least one win in Grand Rapids, but Sebastian Cossa and the Griffins shut them out 4-0, with Cossa earning his first shutout of the AHL season.
The Griffins opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the second period courtesy of John Leonard. Later in the frame, Dominik Shine tapped home a goal from the back door off a creative feed from Leonard. Only 37 seconds later, William Lagesson beat Domenic DiVincentiis over the shoulder to extend the Griffins’ lead to 3-0 heading into the second intermission.
Leonard added his second goal of the night with less than five minutes remaining in the third, sealing Manitoba’s fourth consecutive loss. DiVincentiis finished with 20 saves in the defeat.
Saturday, Oct. 25 – Chicago 4, Manitoba 3 (OT)
The following night, Manitoba faced another quick turnaround, this time against the Wolves, and managed to pick up a point in a 4-3 overtime loss.
Phillip Di Giuseppe opened the scoring 3:32 into the first period, deflecting a Danny Zhilkin shot past goaltender Nikita Quapp. The Wolves responded about four minutes later when Nikita Pavlychev spun and fired from the slot to even the score at one.
In the second period, Domenick Fensore found the top corner through traffic to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. The Moose bounced back after a costly turnover behind the net by Quapp landed on David Gustafsson’s stick. He quickly fed Walker Duehr, who buried his second of the season to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, Mason Shaw waited patiently before sending a cross-crease pass to Duehr, who tapped in his second of the night to put Manitoba ahead 3-2.
The Moose carried that lead deep into the third, but Dominik Badinka’s rush up the ice resulted in a deflection past Thomas Milic to tie the game 3-3 eight minutes into the frame.
In overtime, the Wolves controlled possession for the entire 34 seconds before Fensore walked into the slot and ripped a wrister past Milic to end it, handing Manitoba its fifth straight loss. Milic made 24 saves in the loss.
“We’re building some chemistry. A lot of nice plays from some of our top-end guys, a couple of nice goals by Duehr, it seemed like that line was clicking. Hopefully we can build on that moving forward and continue to put the puck in the net,” said Moose forward Tyson Empey following the overtime loss.
The Moose continue their road trip with two games against the Tucson Roadrunners on Oct. 28 and 29 at Tucson Convention Center Arena. Both contests are set for 8:30 p.m. CDT on AHLTV.
